ETA 5/7/10: The majority of links currently go to LJ posts; any new links will go to DW posts.

ETA 5/15/11: Terminology: "UFO" = unfinished fic object, unfinished posted fic.

ETA 9/01/11: I've received several questions about my fic being available for E-readers. Right now I'm not putting my fic up on the Archive of Our Own for personal reasons (in short: I have control issues) and I don't keep clean copies of my fic that I can e-mail out, since I format everything right in the document rather than keeping one clean and one formatted, but [personal profile] snacky uses Instapaper to put fic on her Kindle, which seems to be a pretty painless procedure. I think there might be other ways of doing so as well, but I'm not aware of them as I don't use an e-reader. I do not have a problem with readers putting my fic on e-readers to read on the go.

It's like the Swan Princess! Except she's really more of a Swan Queen, I guess, but most people don't know that she's actually, you know, Queen Susan of Narnia, they think she's just a princess from one of the westron countries. Anyway, all these knights and princes and so-forth keep coming to try and save her from the sorceror, and at last there's one who's getting close, but the magician defeats him and is about to kill him (or maybe turn him into stone), when he's stopped by a knight dressed all in black. And the black knight and magician fight, and the black knight kills the magician, but then the prince/knight/whoever throws a fit and attacks the knight and knocks his helmet off or something -- and gasp! Who is it but the High King of Narnia himself! (The idiot.) And then they fight and Peter rescues Susan and breaks the curse and so-forth, but Susan is really, really traumatized. (As we can see in "Ere Yet We Loose the Legions.")

I was going to do a ballad, but I don't do poetry, and ballads kind of break my brain.

LORDY. I vote for a darker 'fairytale reinterpreted' tone with between-the-lines commentary on the Problem Of Susan and the concept of Happily Ever After.

And by 'breaking the curse', you of course mean epic makeoutz.

And I don't, you know, actually know what happened because that is one of the background stories that's never really expanded on, although I suppose I could always give Susan, like, latent trauma towards Cornelius or something.

Actually, that would be hilarious in a horrible sort of way, because they're brother and sister, and my Peter doesn't even like women like that. (I am dying to write the story where Peter mysteriously goes missing -- in England -- and Edmund, Susan, and Lucy are trying to figure out how to tell their parents that Peter's definitely not out with a girl. It would be a funny story with kidnapped Peter and Edmund yelling at Susan, "Have your identity crisis later! Right now Peter needs Queen Susan of Narnia!" and Susan generally pushing the girl she's pretending to be aside and getting down to business. And then they argue about which of them has to tell Peter that they outed him to their parents.)

*suspicious* By "The Problem of Susan" you don't mean the Neil Gaiman short story, do you?

Oh ya, it would be hilarious in Bedlamverse, but in Lassverse it would just probably be creepy and full of questionable implications. Party!

omg who kidnaps him?

I mean the whole Susan debacle in general. Her coming of age and embracing coming of age, how fairy tales betray you, how childhood betrays you, how innocence is a burden, how memory is strange. She wasn't expecting any of this, but now she's learning not to expect anything, and that it's just best to be prepared and ready and awake.

I was underwhelmed by the Neil Gaiman story actually. 'Cos, like, there is totally better Narnia fanfiction out there that deals with Susan less clunkily than he has. And Aslan/Jadis wtf? Could've been nice, but felt gratuitous.

1. really annoyed Telmarines. 2. OCs who somehow found out about Narnia and want to use him to get there and exploit it. 3. the White Witch trying to get back into Narnia through a back door. (Dude, where is the fic where the White Witch possesses Peter in England and the other three Pevensies chase Peter/the White Witch around London trying to figure out how to end this, and also Peter/the White Witch seduces Edmund? (Note: I am writing this; it just happens to take place in Narnia and not in England.) Or the fic where Tash and/or the White Witch tempt Peter in England and say they can give him Narnia if he wants it?)

(On a meta Peter/Narnia note, note that Narnia doesn't die until Peter does, which I'm kind of pleased with, but I'm creepy like that.)

As far as Susan goes -- I think I said everything I want to or can say about her in the fanmix I did. *thoughtful* Must ruminate.

I haven't actually read the Gaiman story; I have the audiobook, but I'm kind of scared to listen to it.

OMG. I CANNOT WAIT. I... I CANNOT WAIT. I'm pretty sure I meant to write a Peter/Edmund fic when I entered Narnia fandom, I just got waylaid somewhere somehow. omg make my spine tingle, bed, do it.

Except I do not know who's logical during WWII. (Well...Nazis. But in England?)

Peter backs him up, and Edmund finds himself going against his will. He still thinks he can get away -- somehow, miraculously, even though it's near impossible to escape Peter when he's...being Peter -- right up until the moment when his back hits the wall.

"Pete," he whispers, "what the hell are you doing?"

Peter looks at him, and his eyes are dead-black.

I, um, also have to figure out what other horrible things White Witch!Peter can do, without utterly compromising his rule. (i.e., they can only affect the other Pevensies. Maybe Tumnus and the Beavers. *thoughtful*)

Not since LWW came out, when I happened to be a Peter/Susan shipper.

and then edmund recognizes her and feels her calling to him and then he ends up making out with peter? 'cos PROBABLY. (in my head.)

'Kay, well, since many of the Explaining Susan fics seem to be written then or before then, that's alright. There's nothing to fear from the Gaiman story if only because the Susan fics tend to be better. SAYS I. But ya, audio form can be weird and distracting. Listening to my LWW audiobook, sometimes things just get... silly. (Squeaky Scottish Tumnus, wtf.) So read 'The Problem of Susan' here instead!:
Hooray for the internets.

Okay, that is screwed up. (There is only one Gaiman thing I like, and that's the poem at the beginning of Smoke and Mirrors. Everything else just creeps me out an enormous amount. I know, I fail at being a good fan, because it seems like everyone likes Gaiman, but everything he writes is so messed up!) Almost makes me want to write out my idea of what happened to Susan afterwards -- not the immortal Susan story, but the one where Susan grows up and has children and is happy. Huh. My Susan is Rose from Titanic. Didn't think of that.

Let's go to a happier subject.

"Peter, don't --" Edmund says, the fear flushing over him hot and fast. "Don't -- Pete, this isn't you, snap out of it --"

"Don't be such a baby, Ed," Peter says, and he
sounds like Peter, even though Edmund knows he's not, because Peter would never do this. It's not Peter's style at all, even if -- it's not Peter. He knows those eyes.

Peter takes a step closer, and Edmund can't back up anymore, so what he gets is his brother's body pressed against him. Peter's all hard muscle, everything unneccessary burned away in a decade's worth of killing and fighting and spilling blood for Narnia. The hands that slide into Edmund's and splay them out against the wall are narrow-fingered and calloused in familiar places from holding swords and axes and bows and shields and a country. He smells like Peter -- wine and steel and the tang of armor oil and something that's indisputably Narnia, earth and fire and blood mixed up into one faintly spicy whole.

The White Witch had smelled like ice and snow and sugar.

"Leave my brother out of this," he says desperately. "It's me you want, isn't it?"

I have not, actually. I wasn't interested enough in the fandom at the time (clearly, at some point that changed) to do so, so I filed it away under "file off serial numbers, use in original fic" like I tend to do with most fic-type things I want to write.

OH SUSAN. She deserves a break 'cos MAN, SUCKS TO BE HER. If she were male, she would be instant woobie, for reals.

Wahaha, his creepiness is exactly why I love him. The rewrite of the Snow White story? holy fucked up, batman! But as far as less creepy goes, have you read 'Anansi Boys'? It is much rollicking fun, and 'Stardust' is his book that feels closest in tone to typical fantasy and so is less creepy. Ya, the 'Stardust' movie sucks, MOVING ON.

Re: 'snap out of it' -- You know, I remember when you were talking about how your Pevensies were talking very Ye Olde Englishe-y. Now you've quite gone to the other end!

What makes it even more amazing is that this happens during the first year of their reign. The big fics for PC era are, in order of when they were written: Long Forgotten Wars (, Such Deliberate Disguises (, Once More for the Ages ( (which is Peter/Caspian), In Constellated Wars (, and The Bone's Prayer (

The big fics for the Golden Age are (again in order they were written): These Last Golden Days of Summer (, The False Knight (, In a Dry Month (, and The White City (

Or in other words, chances are that anything that's not titled is filler/commentfic. Almost everything I write uses the same Golden Age backstory and takes place in the same universe; for the fics I just mentioned, up above, those should be readable without knowing the timeline, but they refer back to each other and other events within the 'verse that are either in fic or just mentioned. Anything that's not on this list is probably AU (like the Petaverse, immortal!Susan, random werewolf AUs and Batman crossovers -- no, seriously don't ask), and that can be found under my fanfic tag (

I hope that helps, and drop me a line if you need anything else!

You expansion and revision of the Narnia story has captivated me, most particularly your rendition of Susan. the meta is great, the stories are great, and I find myself at a bit of a loss for words to explain how very, very pleased I am that you have written all of this.

Thank you.

So, I love your Narnia fic, but I can't sit in front of a computer all day and read it, alas. Is there any chance you'll be putting it up on the AO3 so I can download it to my Kindle?

Dude! I just had a massive panic thinking I would never find you again but some google-fu led me to this masterpost and I am SO GRATEFUL.

Just wanted to leave a little friendly note to say that years have passed and your work ages beautifully. I love this universe you created and I am so glad I found it again.
