number one

"Hey, man, how'd you know I was coming in tonight?" Don asks, and David just grins and says something about confidential sources.

At three in the morning even LA's traffic is muted, and Don fumbles his phone out of his pocket, turns it on, and dials home. The phone only rings once before someone picks it up, and Don's about to lecture Charlie on why sleep is important even for math geniuses when Colby says in a low, rough voice, "Hello?"

"Colby?" Don says, surprised, and his first thought is that Charlie has gotten another death threat and no one's told him about it. "What the hell are you doing at my house? Is Charlie okay?"

"Don?" Colby says, sounding a little more awake, and then there's a sound like sheets rustling and someone -- Charlie -- says, "Is that Don? Give me the phone?"

"Just a second," Colby says to Don and (presumably) passes on the phone later.

Charlie sounds a little desperate when he says, "Don, hi, how was Quantico?"

"Fine," Don says. "What's going on? Why is Colby there?"

"I," Charlie says, "Uh. Well --"

And it's been so long since Don's heard Charlie speechless about anything that he's about ready to take the wheel from David and turn on the siren to get home as fast as possible. Then David's phone goes off, along with (presumably) Colby's in the background of Charlie's call, and David says, "Sorry, Don, I kinda have to take this."

In the background, Colby is saying more or less the same thing to Charlie and Charlie says, hurriedly, "Don? I'll meet you there," and hangs up on Colby's protests.

"What the hell's going on?" Don demands of David, who's occupying himself turning the siren on.

"I think I should let Charlie tell you that," David says, which is one of the least encouraging things Don's ever heard, and he's an FBI agent; he's heard a lot of less than encouraging things.

They get to the scene after Colby and Charlie; Megan is kneeling down next to a body. Don gets out of the car to see Charlie trip and Colby catch hin, quick and suddenly careful, fingers lingering a little on Charlie's arm. Charlie turns his head to say something to him and Don's breath stops in his throat, because he's never seen Charlie look like that at anyone before, not even Amita.

"So it's like that," Don says, surprised at how calm his voice is, even though he's pretty sure he wants to grab Colby by the shoulders and shake him.

David glances at him. "Yeah," he says. "It's like that."
