I suddenly want to go off on a long screed in both the Golden Age and Dust about the competition between the salt mines in the High Reaches, the sea salt production around Glasswater, the brine manufacturing in the marshes, how one of the major reason the Calormenes took over is because Narnia has such a ready supply of high quality salt, and therefore the slavery in the High Reaches salt mines is a priority, while back in the Golden Age the centaurs and the dwarves in the High Reaches were always fighting to get control of the salt mines and the Pevensies had to clear this up SO MANY TIMES, then there was some kind of drama regarding the brine in the marshes and the marsh-wiggles, the Bog People, and the centaurs (and there is always drama regarding the marsh-wiggles and the Bog People anyway, but this time the centaurs are getting in on the action), and then there's some kind of hullabaloo in the Shifting Market about all the different kinds of salt, as well as the oceanids and the Narnians who live on the coast arguing about who can properly lay claim to the manufacture of sea salt...

Guess what book I'm reading. No, really, guess.

If you guessed this book, you are absolutely right.

Hey, it is relevent in Dust! And Golden Age Narnia needs some kind of economic powerhouse besides Peter's ability to cow other countries into submission by his military genius! And no one ever talks about salt in fantasy!

...I'll just be over here in the corner, trying to figure out what the hell I did with Dust at the airport last night. (Yes. I did just type the words "plane station" and backspace hastily.)
