snow white & the huntsman
So I saw Snow White & the Huntsman! And it was good. Very pretty, in a Guillermo del Toro sort of way. Kristen Stewart was totally fierce, it was awesome. So was Charlize Theron.
isweedan described it as a story where "Snow White is Caspian but with Jadis as the enemy," and I've seen Ravenna (the Evil Queen) described as a cross between Cate Blanchett's Galadriel and Tilda Swinton's White Witch, so I went in thinking of the story that way, but I came out thinking it could also work really well as genderswapped girl!Caspian with the Lady of the Green Kirtle showing up a generation early, since I got more LotGK off Ravenna than White Witch. I mean, if we're making Narnia comparisons. (And for that matter, Noah Huntley, who played fully-grown Peter in LWW, plays King Magnus, Snow White's dad.)
The village of scarred women was one of my favorite parts; I didn't expect it and I really liked them. And the troll coming out from under the bridge -- the design on the troll wasn't something I cared for, but I liked the way that scene was set up.
William didn't really do much, but -- I loved the way he was introduced, I have a thing for hot, badass archers, and the scene where he joins whatshisface's company was both badass and hot.
I liked the scene where the Huntsman teaches Snow White how to stab someone. There was something painfully honest and straightforward about it, and how sudden it was.
Also the scene where he rips off her skirt (she's wearing pants underneath), because yes! YES A LADY NOT WANDERING AROUND IN A DRESS THANK YOU GODS.
I was a little surprised by Snow White saying the Lord's Prayer at the beginning -- it just seemed weirdly out of place in a story that's all about magic and mystery and fairy tales.
One thing that I really liked is that this story wasn't a romance. I mean, yes, the Huntsman's kiss is the one that restores Snow White from the curse, but the story's not set up as a love story or a love triangle, even though it could clearly go that way. Instead we get William and the Huntsman without any tension between each other -- they like and respect each other (as far as we can tell) -- and Snow White and her two men without romance one way or another. (I mean, okay, the one time Snow White tries to kiss William it turns out to be Ravenna, but that's never made into an issue.) It's not a story about Snow White and two dudes fighting over her, or Snow White trying to choose between two dudes, it's a story about Snow White and her men kicking a lot of ass. More OT3 than anything else, which is awesome.
We got The Bourne Legacy trailer before the movie, and my one real thought was: "This is either (a) how Hawkeye was recruited or (b) the AU where Clint has a similar backstory to Natasha. OR BOTH." And now I want all the crossovers despite the fact the movie hasn't even come out yet.
My smalltown movie theatre still has The Hunger Games, which I thought went out of theatres weeks ago. I kind of want to see it again; maybe I will. I do want to see The Avengers ago; my dad and I might go tomorrow.
