The thing that differentiates Flack from the other math majors at UVa is that he grew up a cop, and thus never learned to reduce people to variables of x and y. To him they are still people, and people are inherently unpredictable. You can't plot a human being's life on a chart the way you can the price of persimmons in Bangladesh. Oh, you can predict, sure enough, but you can predict anything, and that's not math at all, just a basic understanding of human nature.
