I HAVE FIGURED IT OUT.

Water is a story about home.

And for the life of me, I can't believe I didn't see this before. (Granted, I don't think it's supported in the text of Water so far, but it's been in my planning for parts two and three for ages.)

Be Like Water is a story about home, and making your own, and you can't go home again, and the things that make it yours and not someone else's. Part one is about the Pevensies trying to make Caspian's Narnia into their Narnia, which they can't, and trying to reconcile what was with what is, and it's about Caspian finding a place that he's comfortable with and a family. Part two is about Peter's estrangement from his home (and to a lesser extent, about the Pevensies' disconnect from England and from each other) and Peta's being forced out of her home. Part three is about Peta returning home, and about how things change once more, and how you have to fight for what the hell you want, and about the Pevensies discovering the core of what makes Narnia Narnia, and that you choose your own home. (God, I am such an idiot, I've known this for ages. Peta to Peter: "You could stay, you know." Peter: "You know I can't.")

You have no idea what a relief knowing this is.

I was social last night. It was good! Moulin Rouge, craft-making, and some girl talk in a friend's room for four hours or so: awesomeness. Except for the part where by the time I finally got to bed it was almost one and I'd meant to study. OH WELL.

ANYWAY. Our company included two New York girls among a host of Southerners (and me, but the West and especially the PNW doesn't have that much of a reputation), and the New Yorkers were talking about what they missed.

"I miss people being rude to me."

Cue: the Southern girls (and one guy) gawking, and my snickering. Look, I'm from Washington, we don't have stereotypes! Except I had to reassure the guy that NO, THANK YOU VERY MUCH, I AM FROM NOWHERE NEAR FORKS. I am from the cool part of Washington, thanks muchly.

This is made funnier by the fact that, today in Brit Lit, we are talking about Marvell poetry, and specifically about "To His Coy Mistress."

Upperclassman guy: "So last night I saw Twilight --"
Prof: "What's that?"
Half the girls in class: "YOU DID? HOW WAS IT? NO WAIT STOP TALKING."
Prof: "No, really, what is it? Is it a show?"
Girl 1: "IT IS AN UTTERLY FANTASTIC SERIES."
Me: "It's horrid."
Girl 2: "Those books are so badly written!"
Girl 3: "IT IS A BEAUTIFUL LOVE STORY."
Me: "IT IS ABOUT STALKING."
Prof: "...I am so confused."
Upperclassman guy: "SO ANYWAY, in the movie there is --"
Half the girls in class: "NO STOP TALKING."
Upperclassman guy: "I'm not going to spoil anything! Anyway, IN RELATION TO MARVELL --"

The funniest thing about it is that it was this upperclassman fratboy. Well. I think he is not actually a fratboy, I think he's a major player at the Catholic Center, but you know, same thing.

Hey, y'all remember when I did the things I will never write meme a few weeks back? And a bunch of you said Peter/Lucy?

Well, this still isn't Peter/Lucy (and I tried, guys), but it is Peter and Lucy, set during the Golden Age during the Telmarine scuffles (for reference, almost immediately following The White City, and about a year, year and a half, after Peter comes back from Natare. This is after "Old Timber to New Fires" and the Belgarine War), and there may be a few, uh, familiar elements, for those of you who read Dust 5. Most of this predates Dust 5.

Your input would be appreciated, Lu. )
