same old, same old
Feb. 6th, 2011 09:24 pmDid not watch the Superbowl. Irritated with my roommates. Am reading Michael Camille's book on medieval marginalia, and holy shit the Middle Ages were messed up at least by my modern standards. Didn't get as much homework done as I wanted. Finished my sock (awesome, by the way), need to wind yarn for the second sock. Tired, should probably go to bed earlier than usual. Pissed at my Honors Thesis Boot Camp class. (I do not need a "modern hook." I don't care if you're talking about things that Take Place! In Modern Times! And Are Relevant to Society!, I don't give a damn about your topic either. My class is full of poli sci and public health students; I'm the only...eh, for lack of a better world, I'm the only one with a "soft" liberal art in there (English, classics, history, fine arts, art history, all the interesting things). I'm good at feeling paranoid and defensive, though. I'm also pretty sure that even if I bring in, oh, The Hobbit or Narnia or something else modern as a continuation of The Epic, it's not going to make anybody who's not already interested fascinated by Edmund Spenser and The Odyssey. Especially since it's a thesis committee, it's not a popular book. ARGH ARGH ARGH.)
Good: my mother says she's coming to visit in late March. (My dad, on the other hand, is going to Thailand.) My roommate Maryland was apparently feeling as if she liked me enough to offer to take me to Walmart with her yesterday, so I got things I needed that are too expensive or not available at Whole Foods or Rite Aid. (Today she hates me again. See again: me being irritated. Gee, I'm sorry the fact that I was going with my normal plans on a Sunday evening when you have, for the most part, followed a set event schedule wherein you are out of the apartment for several hours fucked with your life and I didn't rearrange my dinner plans around yours.) Okay, I'm failing with the good here. Sock! I finished my sock! I mentioned that already. I also made oatmeal cardamom walnut muffins (another step on my quest to make myself love cardamom, as it is The Spice of My Ancestors) and sweet potato biscuits. I love rolling things out, and I've got a nice new set of biscuit cutters that needed breaking in, too. The weather got substantially better, after being miserable for a couple of days there. (I'm totally prepared to go to grad school in Seattle now, guys. Cold, grey, and drizzly: I have it COVERED. I have whole new standards for rain that Seattle barely ever meets. New Orleans was just an elaborate preparation for Seattle.) I think my Latin test on Friday went pretty well, so I'm hopeful.
