any options besides TB?

I need a disease that kills you slow and leaves you lingering and clear-headed right up until nearly the end, could theoretically put you in a wheelchair (either because of some kind of nerve degeneration or because you're too weak to walk, that sort of thing), for which the symptoms can be more-or-less treated by pre-modern (medieval to Victorian) medicine (preferably some sort of opiate that will leave you fuzzy-headed) but which will eventually kill you over the course of several years. ETA: Character is male, middle-aged, human, upper-class, educated, war veteran, and married with no children.
This is, er, for my Narnia Big Bang. Which I'm currently feeling rather dire about, as it's blocked out as a 150K novel, and I can't write one of those and two-thirds of honors thesis in a month. And I'm torn between (a) fixing whatever I did wrong in Dust 26 by writing more Dust, (b) writing Border Wars, or (c) switching from Dust + Border Wars to something more manageable for the NBB (options include another rollicking Golden Age naval adventure, the Edmund time travel story I've been threatening for years, maybe something with Caspian I the Conqueror, and I just remembered that as I've never actually posted Voices, if I can manage to clean that up as a really last resort (which I've been meaning to do FOR YEARS; it is my oldest WIP in my Narnia folder), it can work too).
