dwarves in ponytails!
Mar. 22nd, 2013 11:15 pmI'm officially on Easter break now, which is weird. Originally I was going to go home, but for various reasons I'm going to be in Leicester for the next month -- well, hopefully not just Leicester, if I can get my shit together enough to make plans to go elsewhere. Hopefully being in close proximity to the uni library will mean that I get research done for my projects for my two classes, and for my still highly theoretical dissertation (OH GOD SEND HELP) and possibly my PhD proposal(s) (SEE ABOVE, RE: SEND HELP).
Mostly I am sincerely worried that I won't actually talk to anyone for a month, or at least until English Flatmate N. returns.

I look at a lot of Hobbit art -- a lot, though less so now that the fandom has slowed down slightly post the mad rush after the theatrical release -- and as such, I see a lot of tropes that show up over and over again. Variations on Thorin with Fili and Kili, Battle of the Five Armies death art, lots of naked or half-naked dwarves, and some stuff that's weirdly specific, like cat- and dog- dwarves, specific poses, Thorin chained and shirtless, King Fili, etc. I was about to pull one of those tonight, and then I realized I only have three examples rather than the requisite five (although I've got a few that are variations but not quite close enough). So a different weirdly specific trope instead!
Tonight's Hobbit art rec theme is: dwarves in ponytails! (I told you it was weirdly specific.)

Yeah, that's six tonight, but I just really like that last one of young Thorin. Actually, one of the most interesting things about this art trope is what the artists choose to do with the fore-braids: leave them down, pull them back, not render them at all. Since Fili has a double set, sometimes the front ones are down and the back ones are pulled into the ponytail; sometimes they're both pulled back; sometimes they're both down. (For the record: I've managed to replicate those braids, and the front set get in the way the way the back set, which start out as Dutch or lace braids, don't. HAIR NERD.) Also, yes, it's only ever Fili, Kili, and Thorin, aside from that one instance of Bofur, who end up in ponytails. Never any of the other dwarves.
Today on the bingo card: chained up shirtless Thorin beingtortured teased (on closer inspection) by Thranduil, dead battle dwarf (though for a change, Azanulbizar rather than Five Armies), genderswapped dwarves (no beards), Thorin and Dwalin being bros and also shirtless, cat!dwarves. (This is all new stuff, btw. The hobbit fandom is a productive fandom.)
