Oh my God, what the fuck, none of you people told me the RAF used a COMPETELY DIFFERENT RANK SYSTEM THAN THE REST OF THE KNOWN WORLD.

Thank God I decided to Wikipedia this crap; I was looking for nicknames for the British Army for Edmund to use. Please don't let me have actually referred to Peter as "Lieutenant Pevensie" in official fic and not just in comments, seeing as how that position DOESN'T EXIST. When he was in Burma he was probably an Flying Officer, yes? But by Malaya he probably was a Flight Lieutenant.

Ha, but Peter would have one of these on his uniform for this.

Now, if you excuse me, I'll be over here SULKING.

IT IS OBVIOUSLY

"dust" was changed within approximately five seconds of this post going up. silly me assuming that the brits were like us and used the same rank system for the army, marines, and air force. APPARENTLY NOT. NO. THEY HAVE TO BE DIFFICULT.

Hey, it's not his fault he got himself shot down, or that he apparently has an addiction to going missing for long periods of time.

OF COURSE THEY DID. Now, our air force, they didn't go trying to have special ranks JUST FOR THEM. *mocks, with love, of course*

It's not just you. See the Doctor Who writers, who had Jack Harkness referring to himself as 'Captain' (doesn't exist) and wearing Flying Lieutenant (two stripes) markings. See them hastily correct it to Group Captain and four stripes by the time Torchwood came around because everyone was pointing and laughing so much.

Though it's really not your fault, the early RFC had to go and base it on naval rankings rather than army.

And the titles are SO AWKWARD TO SAY, too. *still sulking* First I went and memorized every single American military rank (although. it's been a while, and the enlisted are different for every branch; I'm kind of sketchy on anything other than army), for each of the four branches, and then the Brits go and change my hardwon knowledge on me.

:g: we're mean. But think of it like snobbery (and Peter learning to say masongnonese) - if you can say it, it automatically elevates you above the plebs.

*sulks some more* *goes back to Eustace declaring "Of course they're not talking about you! It's so conceited of you to think that you're the King of Summer and the Queen of Spring and all that!" "Possibly because we've been called that for the past two thousand yeras," Peter snaps*

Of course we do it on purpose! LOL to the Late Arrivals club - I've heard of that, but never seen the winged boot. A good landing is one you can walk away from.

And then there's this: (I'll try to track down the pretty little tune used)

The bells of hell go ting-a-ling-a-ling
For you but not for me

For me the angels sing-a-ling-a-ling
They've got the goods for me

Oh death where is thy sting-a-ling-a-ling
Oh grave, thy victory?

The bells of hell go ting-a-ling-a-ling
For you but not for me

Cheerful chaps they were!

Unpleasant discovery.

But don't despair, it was Jill who called him Lieutenant Pevensie (once) and a girl is allowed to make this sort of mistake. And you know, I think it would be a very natural mistake at her part -- military rank wouldn't matter to the girl.

So don't worry, just remember it in future.

Oh, Peter. Crashlands in the jungle, walks back onto his base three weeks later, and everyone is shocked, shocked, because of the guys in his squadron, he was not the one anybody expected to be able to survive that. And he's all, "What? What? And can I get a change of clothes, a shower, and a drink?"

I see Peter has found his kindred spirits. Edmund will be horrified.

Though not necessarily in that order! And yeah, I totally see Peter in the RAF. If you haven't heard of Derek Robinson - he wrote some really good books about the RAF - "Piece of Cake" is set during the Battle of Britain, and a sequal takes place in Africa (can't remember the name). Memorable characters, and fantastic dialogue - as well as showing the reality of the stress and madness of the time. Might help - because I can see Peter hating some of the arrogant lads with no clue of war, and sympathising with the battle hardened and worn veterans.

Oooh, sweet. I will look them up. (Although I need more books like I need a hole in my head; I bought seven books last week. And no, I didn't buy a book a day, but now I'm out of room on my extremely tiny dorm room bookshelf. Silly textbooks, it's not like those are important.)
