Continued on from here. I may redo these later with commentary the way I did here. For those that don't know, there's a nice definition of a sea shanty here.
One marching cadence from the Royal Narnian Army, one merchant sea shanty, and one Narnian Navy sea shanty.
I don't know but I've been told
Cair Paravel is getting old
There are sights I'd like to see
That are far away from me
A wooded hill, a bloody vale
A battle out of olden tales
A mountain on a starry plain
A ship upon the Eastern Main
I don't know but I've been told
We are Narnian fighting souls
Far away from here we'll go
And then I guess I'll surely know!
This one is based on an actual cadence we used to sing in marching band (when we weren't playing, obviously; usually on the way back from the Rodeo Parade). I can't find the lyrics we used, but they start out, "I don't know but I've been told / Marching band is getting old / Sound off (one two) / Sound off (three four)." It looks like it may have originally started out as a U.S. Navy cadence.
This cadence was probably used at the Royal Narnian Army training camp outside Cair Paravel.
Oh, where's your port of berth, m'boys
berth m'boys, berth m'boys
Oh, where's your port of berth, m'boys
And where are ye bound in the mornin'?
Oh, we are from Cair Paravel
Cair Paravel, Cair Paravel
Oh, we are from Cair Paravel
And we are bound for Tashbaan.
What cargo do ye have, m'boys
have m'boys, have m'boys
What cargo do ye have, m'boys
And might ye give it up now?
Our cargo it is salt and tea
salt and tea, salt and tea
Our cargo it is salt and tea
And we shall not give it up.
Then we shall have to take it, lads
take it lads, take it lads
Then we shall have to take it, lads
For we are bonny pirates.
Then we shall have to kill you all
kill you all, kill you all
Then we shall have to kill you all
For we are Narnian sailors!
And Narnian lads I see ye are
see ye are, see ye are
And Narnian lads I see ye are
And strange ye are to see.
And do you see the swords we wear
swords we wear, swords we wear
And do you see the swords we wear
And know the strength of our navy?
I see those bonny swords ye wear
swords ye wear, swords ye wear
I see those bonny swords ye wear
And I know the strength of your navy.
So get you gone if life you love
life you love, life you love
So get you gone if life you love
Or die on our decks this morning.
Fare thee well, oh Narnian ship
Narnian ship, Narnian ship
Fare thee well, oh Narnian ship
And safely speed your passing!
The first of the sea shanties -- this one details a merchant ship's reply to being hailed by pirates. I think it goes without saying that Narnian sailors have one hell of a reputation. (It goes without saying that this was probably used on the Navy ships as well.)
In southern Narnia I was born
Heave away, haul away
The finest land that's e'er been known.
We're off to fight for Narnia
Haul away, my boys and girls
Heave away, haul away
Haul away, my girls and boys
We're off to fight for Narnia
Old Seaworth came and said to me
"Lad (lass), how'd you like to go to sea?"
Oh, off I went that very day
For four moons three stars navy pay
I went up to Paravel town
To serve beneath the Lion's crown
The ships were in the harbor green
Filled with boys and girls like me
The Eastern Ocean was our home
Far away from Narnian loam
The Sandfly (Mattie) ships came from the south
As if straight out of Tash's mouth (Sailing straight from cold hell's mouth)
We made our stand upon the waves
Where 'neath the sea would be our graves
We fought and swore and killed and died
All across the ocean wide
We took their ships and killed their men
And wished that we could start again
We pulled their banners from the air
And sent up the Lion fair
The battle, it was ours that day
Heave away, haul away
And so we earned our navy pay
We're bound for home in Narnia
Haul away, my boys and girls
Heave away, haul away
Haul away, my girls and boys
We're bound for home in Narnia
And now I'm home on Narnian land
With a bottle of faun wine in my hand
I have my girl (boy) and I love her (him) well
I love her (him) in the green grass dell
But still I walk upon the shore
And wish to go to sea once more
So to the harbor blue I went
Heave away, haul away
To wear again the gold trident
We're off to sail for Narnia
Haul away, my boys and girls
Heave away, haul away
Haul away, my girls and boys
We're off to sail for Narnia
Oh, Southern Narnia, I love you well
But I fear I must bid you farewell
There's nowhere else I'd rather be
Than sailing on the Eastern Sea!
Based on South Australia and sung to the same tune. (This is The Pogues' version; the version I used for reference was Heather Alexander's cover from Arms of the Sea.)
The original version I wrote used lyrics detailing a sea battle against the Calormene fleet, but as it happens, I'm not sure there ever actually was a Narnian-Calormene sea battle in the Warsverse, so there are altered lyrics for the Warsverse-canonical sea battle against the Masongnongese navy. "Sandfly" is, of course, a derogatory term for the Calormenes. Lyric variations for male or female singers.
I am almost ashamed to say that there will probably be more. I am pretty sure that other people actually write fic.
