bedlamsbard: natasha romanoff from the black widow prelude comic (duel of the fates (forestgraphics))

Post of fannish joy! I am bad at waiting, so I may come back and reorganize this later, as some of the scans aren't terribly good -- I'm on a learning curve here, okay -- and I've only done about a third of my SW comics collection.

So let's start with some Quinlan Vos, who's a major Star Wars EU character. This is from the Stark Hyperspace War, which takes place about, uh, ten years before TPM? Anyway, I am not terribly keen on the art, but the Stark Hyperspace War is where Obi-Wan and Quinlan meet for the first time, and LOOK AT THEM. LOOK AT THEM, THEY'RE BABIES. (I think Obi-Wan is thirteen.)

Hard to believe that these punks grow up into these guys, huh?

That is from the Clone Wars: The Defense of Kamino TPB. We shall now pause for a brief Anakin and Obi-Wan interlude, because that page is directly preceded by this one:

Communication problems much, boys? Obi-Wan tries to make it up later, in one of the most lolarious scenes in the comics. (I would have scanned the whole scene, because it's great, but I'm trying to stick to single pages and panels.)

Context: Kamino, the planet of the cloners (we see it in AotC), is being attacked by the Separatists. Obi-Wan has been shot down and managed to land his starfighter in the middle of the ocean, where he's promptly attacked by some kind of giant sea creature. Anakin saves him by flying his starfighter into the thing's mouth and jumping out, where Obi-Wan saves him by dragging him onto the sinking starfighter. Then they're attacked by toothy flying things. Then Obi-Wan decides now is a good time to talk about their relationship.

Just some panels from "Sacrifice" that I really like, with Quinlan Vos and his former padawan, Aayla Secura. (This is within a couple of months after the Battle of Geonosis.) Vos is undercover and has gone off the radar, so Aayla's been sent after him. There are, of course, complications.

"And if we lose? If more of us die?" "Then we fight and we lose and we still are Jedi." One of my absolute favorite exchanges in all of Star Wars, comics or movies. The theme tends to crop up a lot in my writing.

Random panel from "Blast Radius", with Obi-Wan hanging off things (stay away from volcanic planets, Obi-Wan! Also, why are you always hanging off things?) and Asajj Ventress trying to tempt him to join the Separatists. And a familiar reminder of Dooku's obsession with Obi-Wan.

Now some scenes from one of my favorite arcs in the Clone Wars comics, "Last Stand on Jabiim" and its fallout. I restrained myself here.

Context: When Obi-Wan is believed killed in action on the rain-soaked planet of Jabiim, Anakin is sent to join the "Padawan Pack", a group of masterless Padawans assigned to the same planet. You'd think this would be lulzy, but this is one of the times when Star Wars isn't full of hijinks and shenanigans, just tears. As the remaining Jedi Knights on the planet are killed in combat, the Padawan Pack tries to survive.

So just some panels that I really liked.

Anakin likes to make an entrance.

Palpatine saves Anakin's life by ordering him away to coordinate the evacuation efforts. The remaining Padawans aren't so lucky.

...oh, man, I should have scanned more stuff from this arc. There's a really gorgeous panel of Anakin standing alone, his head tipped against the wall of a gunship as they evacuate, utterly horrified. Also, later, crying.

Immediately afterwards, Anakin is ordered to Aargonar, where he and the Jedi Master A'Sharad Hett crash. Anakin tries to repair the gunship. He is not very mentally or emotionally stable at the time.

That last panel -- Anakin, alone, with the enemy coming at him -- is one of the most terrifying panels in the series. I LOVE IT. (He's...also hallucinating, if that's not obvious with the red-shaded scenes.)

I just like this one because Anakin looks so happy -- he's flying! he's flying really well! he's being a tricksy bastard! -- and Hett looks so grumpy. (He's also from Tatooine.)

Then Anakin crashes the gunship. (AGAIN.) But another really nice one with Jedi identity.

SHOCK. SURPRISE. Man, I'm really sad that they never really followed up on Obi-Wan's ~feelings and Dark Side after hearing Anakin had been killed. (The follow-up is a different writer, so I guess Haden Blackman decided to work his Anakin/Obi-Wan out in a different way than John Ostrander. In the slashiest way possible without actual makeouts, which we shall see later.)

And that's it for today! There's some nice Anakin and Obi-Wan stuff from "The New Face of War" (Obi-Wan gets pistol-whipped and has his head stood on in the mud!, but I'm not a huge fan of Tomas Giorello's art and there's nothing spectacularly fantastic in that one (unless you count ZOMBIE GUNGANS and Obi-Wan and Ventress coming face-to-face for the first time, the start of their great three-year flirtation. "Now I know my enemy's face -- and his heart."). Then there's "Catspaw", which has no Anakin or Obi-Wan, but does feature Shaak Ti being a total badass. And Jan Duursema does really great fight scenes.

I hope y'all enjoyed this as much as I did!
