bedlamsbardApparently my new life goal is to replicate Fili's hair. Which is not that complicated except when it is. Tragically it also involves staring at a lot of pictures of Dean O'Gorman in wig and costume. Oh, the horror. How will I ever bear it?
Today I got as far as making the two lace braids, but I made them too big -- not enough hair left over for the two front braids. So smaller braids, and I think I need to do the front braids first, which are just regular English braids, because otherwise I pull it all back into the lace braids. So I think: front braids, lace braids, and then (though it's hard to find pictures of the back of his head, but you can see it when he bows in the There is Nobody Home! clip) pull it into a half-back. Even when I'm just doing it for myself, I always pull more hair back than I really need to, so next time I will try doing the half-back last. Yesterday I did it first and braided it because I didn't have a reference at the time, then did the front braids (too small, came out looking like elf-locks in pretty much Legolas's hair -- although I'd done English braids, not fishtails, so not quite straight on), but in that clip it's clearly just pulled back.
I feel like I simultaneously need more and less hair -- my hair is longer but not as thick as whatever they're using for the wigs. (It's about halfway to three-quarters down my back.) Ah, well, at least trying to replicate fantasy hairstyles is a long and time-honored tradition. And trying to replicate Fili's hair (though, ha, not most of the other dwarves, which I am going to avoid because...I do not have a beard...) is easier than trying to do Padme Amidala's.
And actually, I'm pretty happy I'm back to playing with my hair; I just don't have the energy or the patience for it when I'm stressed or unhappy. So it's a good thing, even if maybe it seems a little shallow. I do need to buy smaller hairbands, though.
