Today's Hobbit art rec post might require a bit of lead-in, since this is a character that doesn't appear in the books or the movie. Compelling!

Today's theme is Dis, younger sister of Thorin Oakenshield and mother of Fili and Kili. (And if you pause and think about it for a second, you promptly realize that she basically has the worst life ever.) She is the only dwarf woman to be named in all of Tolkien and the only place that she appears (unless I've missed something from the books I haven't read) is in the RotK appendices. So from that alone, she is awesome, and for a character that never appears, there is a surprising amount of art featuring her. Also let us stack in the dead men in her life by the end of The Hobbit, in order of dying: Grandpa Thror, Papa Thrain, brother Frerin, husband unnamed (according to the supplementary movie material), son Fili, son Kili, brother Thorin. Also presumably both her mother and grandmother, everyone who died when Smaug took Erebor and everyone who died in the Battle of Azanulbizar. POOR DIS.

Because she doesn't appear in the books or the movie, there's no real consensus on her appearance, though there's quite a bit of art done that makes her look like a genderswapped Thorin. Two previous rec sets have had her in them, here and here.

Oh, hey, I have enough Dis art left that I can do another Dis set.
