bedlamsbard: natasha romanoff from the black widow prelude comic (city life (rah-rahkthnxbye))

Playing with the idea of a new character in the Bardverse following Mac's demotion at the end of Bloody Sunday, and our core characters reaction to him: Lieutenant Neal Winchester, late of the crime scene division of the Lawrence Police Department in Lawrence, Kansas (name and location pertinent if you want to look at it that way), recently hired by the NYPD to head the NYPD crime lab. Does not actually appear in this ficlet. If I were to continue writing Blue Blood, he'd probably first appear there in the novel-lengths. As per usual, I have no idea what he looks like. I'm not a visual writer, guys (which does not explain why I write from tv/movie/comics fandoms usually. *sigh*).

Also with a special appearance by ghost!Aiden

“You know,” Danny said, feet kicked up on Mac’s coffee table, “if I didn’t hate the guy’s guts on principle, he’d actually be a pretty decent boss.”

“Danny,” Mac said, narrow-eyed.

“I mean, sure, he’s got the whole holier-than-thou thing goin’ on with him, but you had that too. Well, I mean, you don’t anymore, but you know what I mean. So does Lindsay. Maybe it’s a Midwest thing.” He turned to Flack. “What do you think?”

“I think that if you don’t get your boots off Mac’s table he’s gonna kick your ass, Messer,” Flack said, hooking an arm over the back of the couch next to Danny’s neck.

Danny took his feet off the table. “What do you think, Stel?”

“I think Winchester knows what he’s doing,” Stella said, swirling her champagne around. “This is good, Danny. Where’d you get it?”

“Christmas present,” Danny shrugged.

“Which fell off the back of a truck?”

“Absolutely not,” he said indignantly. “My uncle gave it to me, from Nicky Pagliuca. Where it came from before that, well –” He shrugged. “Not my problem.”

“You suck as a cop, Danny,” Flack said, rolling his eyes.

“I’ve also been told I suck as a cop on the take,” Danny said, cheerful now. “You know, what with the whole refusing to take money to rat out my pals thing, ya know.”

Mac pinched the bridge of his nose between his fingers. “I don’t need to hear this.”

Aiden materialized suddenly next to Danny, perching on the armrest of the couch with her legs crossed over each other. “On the bright side,” she said to Danny, who tilted his head up consideringly, “he can’t try and fire you again.”

“He didn’t fire me the first time,” Danny pointed out indignantly. “He threatened, and I quit, and then he rehired me without even telling me.”

“Now we just gotta worry about Lieutenant Kansas gettin’ fed up with us and pullin’ another trick like that,” Flack said, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. “You pissed off, Mac?”

“I think Lieutenant Winchester is very competent,” Mac said diplomatically. “He has a lot of experience as a CSI –”

“– in Kansas,” Aiden put in.

“– and in a command position.”

“Again, I repeat: in Lawrence fucking Kansas,” Aiden said. “This is New York City. There’s a tiny bit of a difference.”

“Just a little,” Flack nodded. “Look on the bright side, Aiden: you don’t got to work with him, just show up and creep him out occasionally.”

“Here, have a new boss from the middle of nowhere,” Danny said bitterly, and knocked back his glass of champagne. “Happy fucking New Year.”

Off to watch Buffy season five and write kickass Anakin now. Happy New Year! May 2007 be happier than 2006!

I love how he goes from bitchy and gossipy while complaining about their new boss, to suddenly affronted when asked about the champagne :D The boy is definitely bi-polar, but still totally awesome.

Here! I have no exclamation marks in my reply, so I have to add some! Whee!

And then he goes completely bitter over Winchester again. Oh, Danny. Your insanity is only matched by that of your coworkers.

He's remarkably sane considering the universe he lives in... ghosts and mafia and the like :)

Not to mention the multiverse. That would drive anyone nuts. (Actually, I have the vague urge to go off on a tangent on how the multiverse has affected the core quartet personally, but I am going to resist)

I hear sanity is fun. *grins brightly* I'll try typing something up tomorrow, maybe.

Sanity is vastly over-rated. Yay!

Okay, it goes something like this:

Danny has a theory that their time in the grand scheme of the multiverse has changed them somehow. Well, maybe grand scheme is pushing it, but he has a theory that their time in the multiverse - in other universes - has had some kind of effect on them. It's not that he's smarter, per se, but he's starting to pick up things he wouldn't have picked up before, and they ain't cop things or criminal things, not the sort of things he would have kicked himself for not picking up before. A couple months back they ran a case at NYU's physics department, and for a while there one of the profs was their lead suspect. Danny sat in on a couple of his lectures - upper level physics, there, way beyond the Phys 101 he took in college - and actually got halfway to understanding what the hell Doc McKay was talking about. Not completely, but halfway is still farther than he's ever got before. He's not sure about Mac and Stella, but he was there when Flack took out five baby mobsters without breaking out his gun and promptly handed 'em over to a pissed-off Orlando d'Alessandro when he came to pick them up, which Danny's sure as hell Flack couldn't have done before.

Anyway, his theory is this: ultimately, all the diffeent faces of a single person stem from the same root source, and therefore the potential for everything is inherent in every facet the multiverse presents. Visiting another universe (holy fuck) is probably going to expose one facet to another, and so open up the potential there. It explains why Danny is starting to get a clue about higher level physics and why Flack can kill - or, well, disable - anything with a pulse with his little finger. They can't do everything the other Flack and Danny could do - the Lieutenant Flack and Dr. Messer - because a lot of that came from long training, not instinct, but they've got the instinctual stuff done pat. It makes him curious to find out if Mac and Stella are showing the same signs of multiverse travel.

Or, um, something like that anyway. Sorry about the work; homework ate my brain.

HOLY CRAP ♥

Sheer frakking awesomness. Um, I'll come up with something slightly more sense-making-ish when my brain stops with the GUH.

*laughs* Take your time. It was just something I was thinking of to justify the not-canonness of the bardverse (not, um, that it worked).
