I was accepted to the Brown University summer scholars program! This means I'll be at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, for four weeks this summer studying creative writing -- yes, I know, I actually gave in and am going to try doing actual work at it. And, you know, doing a lot of college prep stuff, since they're running a college fair as well as visits to other schools in the general area (unfortunately, the two I'm most interested in are in the week before and the week after my program, but hey, you get what you get).

Thank you! I hope it's at least as fun as Stanford University was last summer, and it should be a good experience writing-wise.

WooHoo!!! Congrats!!! And good luck! If the colleges you're interesting in aren't being presented while you're there, have a chat with one of the fair's organizers. Perhaps they can give you some info they may have on hand leftover from the ones before you arrive or have in prep for the one after you're gone. It won't hurt to ask for assistance - and you may get it.

Thank you! I'm pretty sure those two colleges -- *checks* darn, three -- are going to be at the college fair, since they're Dartmouth, Wesleyan, and Boston U, but I'm kind of disappointed I'll miss the visits. It's supposed to be a big college fair, though, and since most of the schools I'm interested in are in the general area, they should be represented.

Woo! Good for you. You'll be okay, although actually working at creative writing may piss you off. (that might just be me who gets that, though). And dude, happy -- belated -- birthday. (if I'm remembering right).

Thank you! It may, yeah, but I figure it'll be a pretty good experience since my goal for this year is to finish my novel.

Hurrah, seventeen.

One thing I've found is that in creative writing courses I just ... get a little fed up because I feel like I'm doing basic shit over and over, and sometimes I forget that basics are a good thing ;) But it should be a great experience, yeah. You're a fantastic writer and you'll get a lot out of it, I think.

Seventeen is a pretty decent age to be. And just one year from being able to vote and things :)

I've always been really, really dubious about going for creative writing in anything -- studying it, I mean, because I've heard bad things about taking classes. Like, that it can be a hell of a lot more hurt than good. But I'm willing to take a chance, I guess. What made me decide to apply for creative writing instead of script writing was that they're separating the students into groups based on genre (which means they'll sit me down and go "okay, you've got angels and magic and genetic engineering. er.".

Okay, that's freaky. True, but freaky.

I had some really good professors at UMF when I was majoring in creative writing. Sometimes it can be hurt, sometimes it's more the kind of "this is going to get worse before it gets better".

They'll probably stow you away in SciFi/Fantasy and pray. Because they're not creative.

*crosses fingers*

Well, it's urban fantasy, which encompasses many things. A little more fantasy than sf, but that's just because that's where my background is, I think.
