CSI:NY fic: Bardverse

I'm trying to make myself write at least a little bit of Bardverse every week -- just a snapshot, probably all post-Bloody Sunday. This one takes place shortly before "Drought."



When his phone rang sometime around three in the morning, Mac had enough time to say, "Detective Tay --" before Angell's voice cut him off.

"D.J. Pratt's dead," she said. "I'd cry, but I somehow can't bring myself to care. Funny how that works, isn't it?"

"Where?" Mac said, sitting up. He'd drifted off on top of a pile of job appications, possible new CSIs to replace Aiden. As far as homicide liaisons went, he was already covered. He'd seen to that even before Flack's transfer papers crossed his desk.

Angell gave him the address. "I wouldn't have bothered you, only you said anything involving Pratt be rerouted to you immediately. Lindsay and Hawkes are already on the scene."

"I'll be there as soon as possible," MAc assured her. After she'd hung up, he dialed another number, listening to the line ring once, twice, three times before the other end picked up and Stella said groggily, "Yeah?"

"Stella, I need you to take a couple uniforms and pick up Aiden Burn for murder."

"Stella?" Aiden said uncomprehendingly, staring at her. She was in pajama pants and a long-sleeved Barnard t-shirt, thick black hair in tangles around her face. Stella wasn't looking deliberately, but she couldn't help noticing that Aiden had one hand behind the doorframe, out of sight.

"You're under arrest," Stella said finally, after Aiden had stared at her for a good two minutes, waiting.

Aiden's eyebrows flew upward and her chin lowered slightly. "What?"

"Turn around and put your hands behind your back, "Stella said, taking her cuffs off her hip.

"For what?" She put her gun down on the small table by the door -- "That's loaded, Detective," she added coldly, nodding towards it. "You have a charge?"

"The murder of D.J. Pratt. You have the right to remain silent --"

"That bastard's dead?" Aiden said, glancing over her shoulder. "Good." She took in the uniforms Stella'd brought with her, eyebrows still raised. "And obviously I'm Mac's first suspect. You can tell him he can go to hell."

Of course Danny did it. I had no doubts at all. I bet Danny's pissed that Mac dragged Aiden into it, though, especially like that... I mean, he didn't even give her a moment of doubt, just had her arrested without even waiting to see the evidence. Bastard.

Mac totally deserves to be shot in your verse. I support this. I bet Danny would contemplate it, too.

Stella's kinda a bitch for following Mac's (obviously bad) orders so blindly.

Danny's going to go psycho and send Aiden a really good Mob lawyer, but he's smart enough not to actually show up and yell at Mac about it, because that would be dumb and also, obvious.

You know, I don't actually think it would take all that much to push Mac to this point -- I mean, right now in canon he's very nearly there already, but it's only going to take a few more stones to fall before Mac is leaping without looking. I mean, with the Dobson case, the only thing he didn't do was arrest the guy.

Danny's petty. He wouldn't shoot Mac, he'd like, eviscerate him or something. He'd destroy Mac's reputation with the force, which he could probably do.

Stella has her reasons. I mean, I have no idea what they are, but she has them.

And Danny's a great CSI, even if his methods aren't as... orthodox... as Mac would like them to be.

Mac in canon had started to become more about MYSELF and less about MY TEAM, which is kind of a bad thing... at least with the Dobson case and his own review after...

Hell, like Mac's methods are orthodox. Mac has gone over the edge, seriously. I'd definitely rather have Danny working the case than Mac, because right now it seems more like Danny cares about the case and Mac cares about being right, no matter what the cost.

*nods* I hope they stay with this character arc next season, because they could do really interesting things with it.

Sigh. Oh Mac. It's so hard to believe how much he's changed from the straight-laced ex-soldier in season one. I remember the dog-show episode, where he takes his tie off for the first time, and Stella is shocked. And now look at him. He's turned out to be more unpredictable than Danny. He accuses Danny of not following orders, but then he himself walks out of a courtroom, and breaks rules to get to Hawkes when he's arrested, and he's just a loose canon suddenly.

I have no hope for CSI: NY doing anything too fantastic. That would be giving the writers too much credit. I'd at least like them to bring Reed back, though.

Yeah, I know. It's weird -- I mean, in a way it's cool, but in that kind of way where it's really uncomfortable and you genuinely don't know what he's going to do next. I hope it's something gloriously, brilliantly wrong and his team is left to pick up the pieces while Mac sits in an interrogation room or something.

They're pretty good with the little subtle things, but they play a long game. I'm pretty sure they'll bring Reed back, but if they don't do anything with Danny's Mafia past I swear to God -- and have Lindsay explode, that'd be good too. (Not literally.) And maybe bring up Aiden and Flack's literal explosion.

Yet, unlikely, because the CSI shows put their CSIs forward as ALWAYS ON THE SIDE OF RIGHT, even if they might venture off the path every so often (see: Nick with the prostitute, or Eric with his pot).

I was so disappointed when they didn't do anything with Flack and the season 2 finale... like, they threw in one line in the 3x01 opening banter, but that was it. SUCK.

I wish they'd mention Aiden again, but they never mention Speed in Miami, so I'm going to say it's unlikely. :( Man, the CSI shows really suck sometimes.

But yes, I agree. Danny's Mafia past MUST come up. Fingers crossed for season 4.

Nearly all crime shows always put their heroes on the side of right (except Numb3rs with my favorite character, which trust me, I will soon be remedying if I ever get around to writing that fic), which is why I had to write LaMontaine.

Hopefully they don't do the same thing with Danny and Adam and the S3 finale, because that would suck and Danny's hand.

I have Aiden on the mind because I just wrote her. *sigh* And it's like fandom forgot about her, too -- can you believe that Lindsay has been on the show longer than Aiden? Creepy.

Seriously, it's too good to pass up. They have to use it somehow.

I'm sure they'll at least mention it, but god, they could do so much with it... Danny's hand making it difficult to go back to work, Danny and Lindsay growing closer (or, y'know, farther, as Danny pushes her away because he's afraid she'll get hurt if she stays close to him, cause everyone else has! Aiden, Flack, etc), Danny and Adam having a bond in the lab that no one else has, because of what they went through together...

I miss Aiden. I'm thinking of getting my hair cut in that same style that she has, actually.

*crosses fingers* C'mon, CBS! I have...well, I have a teeny tiny bit of faith in you. You know, that finale would actually have been a great lead-in to Season X, because you have Danny being insecure about his job security...

I still think you need to send Season X to the CBS people. Who knows, maybe they'll use it and then call you and be like "HEY, COME WORK FOR US". Okay, not likely, but, y'know. :D

All I know of the Dresden Files is what I've read on the backcovers of the novels in the bookstore, which looked decent, but which I was reluctant to spend money on.

I have all of the Dresden novels as e-books (except the most recent one, which came out in April, I think), if you're interested. Apparently, they're very good, though I haven't read them yet. The TV show is awesome, though, and brilliant.

It's about a wizard named Harry from Chicago. And his wand? IS A HOCKEY STICK. I mean, come on, that right there wins about a million bonus points.

It's really funny and sarcastic, too. The actor who plays Harry in the show is fantastic. The books are different, though, in a number of ways...

I have no idea when the series will be on DVD... not very soon, I would guess. The show aired in January, and ran 13 episodes. Oh, hey, amazon.com is saying August 7 (http://www.amazon.com/Dresden-Files-Complete-First-Season/dp/B000QUEQ4U/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/105-5997096-4997215?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1181793850&sr=1-1), which surprises me, but cool. $30 is a little much for a half-season on DVD, though, so I might have to try to find it on sale for $20 or less, or just live with my illegalities.
