CSI:NY fic: Bardverse snapshot
Jun. 16th, 2007 05:22 pmSenior Project: 1,786 words, so far, out of a 100,000 minimum. Characters? Still on Earth. Plot? Uh. Due in March/April.
And another Bardverse snapshot, set a little bit before the last one. (Chronological order? Why would I do a crazy thing like that?)
"So, Flack," LaMontagne said, and Flack turned around, coffee cup in hand, "why'd you really leave the NYPD?"
"Thought we covered that in my interview," Flack said.
"We probably did," LaMontagne said, "but you'll remember that I wasn't there. I'm a senior detective, not a supervisory one. My -- our lieutenant -- was in on that, not me." He paused, watching Flack significantly, and added, "Not a lot of new cops are comin' into New Orleans. Those that are, well." He waved a hand. "They aren't always the type you want watchin' your back."
Flack narrowed his eyes, then he set his coffee cup down and said, "A couple years back, my partner quit the force because my boss wanted him to choose between the department and his family. Not long ago, he fired another detective, a friend, for something she didn't do. Some of the other shit he's pulled -- I couldn't work with that anymore. Not without it turning me into someone I couldn't look at in the mirror anymore."
LaMontagne's dark gaze was quiet, still. "New Orleans is no cakewalk, Detective," he said finally. "I've been doin' it my entire life, and it still shocks me what people can do to each other. If you came here thinking it was gonna be an easy gig --"
"I came here to be a cop again," Flack said. "Not some kinda muscle -- to remember why I joined the force again. I couldn't do that back home. Not with Mac there, not with Danny --" He stopped. "Gone," he finished finally.
LaMontagne nodded. "I think you'll fit in just fine, Flack," he said, smiling slowly. Flack could see the edge of a broken tooth, sheared off crookedly with no telltale cap, on the right side of his mouth; there was a small scar next to LaMontagne's eye and another one at the corner of his mouth. Nothing on Flack's scars, but signficant nonetheless.
"Thanks," Flack said, returning the smile. "I'd ask the same if you came on to my old team when it still was a team." He inclined his head slightly. "You're good police, LaMontagne."
"Glad I meet your expectations," LaMontagne said, but he was smiling. His cell phone buzzed; he glanced at it and slapped Flack on the arm. "C'mon. I'll go show you our first murder."

Date: 2007-06-17 01:42 pm (UTC)Flack in New Orleans is amazing, I really like the snapshot, but I need to
re-read bardverse, because I missed a bunch of stuff.(no subject)
Date: 2007-06-17 10:34 pm (UTC)Oh, don't worry, you're not missing stuff -- this is AU from the Bloody Sunday and post-BS Bardverse that's on my LJ, where Danny quit the NYPD during Bloody Sunday and joined the Mafia. This is, like, six years afterward.
Thanks for reading!

Flack should have fun in New Orleans. And it'll be a lot healthier than staying with the Crime Lab.

Date: 2007-06-18 02:03 am (UTC)Flack's gonna have a great time in NO. And no crappy bosses just waiting to fire another CSI.

Date: 2007-06-18 02:31 am (UTC)Which is the main reason he went, of course. And because New Orleans needs cops, badly, and he can do something good there -- learn how to be himself again.

Date: 2007-06-18 02:36 am (UTC)I almost want to blame Danny for Flack having to do this, even though I know it's not Danny's fault.
Will we ever get to see more from Flack in the Bardverse, after this?

Date: 2007-06-18 02:43 am (UTC)There are two things I'd like to do with Flack: write a scene where he and LaMontagne have to come up to New York (like Scotty from Cold Case did in that one ep not long ago), and write a scene where Danny comes to New Orleans on business. Beyond that, well -- *waves hand* The Bardverse isn't about one character, even though it seems to be about Danny's Big Mob Troubles. It's why I hesitate to set another big story in it post-Bloody Sunday, because it has to have everyone, just like the show. The Man Who Wasn't There does that; after that, well...the only thing that comes close would be the D.J. Pratt story, but even that doesn't have everyone.
