I promised myself that if I survived the city (no, seriously, I wasn't kidding), I'd come back and do writing exercises, so you get music recs and fic. Bear in mind that I'm on my laptop, and the majority of my music is at home on my desktop, so this is not, perhaps, what I'd give you if I was at home. Links are to lyrics, if there are any.

Modern and Contemporary - "Festival of Ghouls" (instrumental)

The third time Danny meets Lannister on Cal Tarka it's a festival day and the streets are full. The shield's been dialed up to double-strength to keep out the wind and it may be the only time he's ever been there when he isn't having sand flung in his face at fifty miles per hour. The bars have moved outside in honor of the occasion, filling up the narrow, narrow sidewalks with tables barely large enough to hold a single tray of drinks, and there are dancers moving adroitly through the crowds in little shimmers of costumes that cover next to nothing. Danny starts grinning, bypassing the booths filling up Market Street and spilling over onto Thieves Way, and stands on tiptoe at the end of one bar's tables and the beginning of another's, trying to see Lannister's telltale red hair. It's not rare on Cal Tarka, but it is uncommon.

Lannister waves at him. He's sitting alone at a table near the edge of the street, talking to a dancer who's leaning in toward him with most of her generous cleavage showing, but none of Lannister's attention is on that. He only takes time out from talking to gesture Danny over.

Danny has to thread his way through the crowd, nearly running over a waitress, two more dancers, and a vendor who tries to sell him what Danny's certain are drugs. He thinks it may be the only time he's seen the Cal Tarka'ii dressed in anything other than robes that cover them from head to toe.

Lannister says something to the dancer in a soft, almost lisping sort of language that's nothing like the harsh syllables of Tarki and spills a handful of coins into the pouch she's got tucked between her breasts as she leans forward further. She vanishes into the crowd as Danny sits down, scooting the chair back as far as he dares.

Patrick Park - "Something Pretty"

Anakin has thought, sometimes, of going to Naboo to see Padme and his child, but it's never more than a passing wish. It's too dangerous; he can't afford to draw down Imperial attention on Naboo by being seen there. He's a Jedi Knight, one of the most wanted war criminals in or out of the Empire, and Padme Naberrie Amidala is something else entirely. They're both beyond each other now.

Obi-Wan, though -- some days, most days, he regrets sending Obi-Wan away. He's missed Obi-Wan for ten years. Padme is a passing thought; Obi-Wan is a weight in the back of his mind that never flees entirely. Anakin wakes aching for a friend at his back, but everything he touches he destroys. Obi-Wan can take care of himself -- and it's taken Anakin ten years to know and understand this -- but Ixradic can't. If he sends Obi-Wan away he can still take care of one of the two, but that's little comfort in the night when the Force folds around him, silent and accusing.

Frou Frou - "Close Up"

He's done this. Somehow, some way, Anakin knows he's to blame. He spends his days in a rathole of an inn deep in the depths of the city; spends his nights hunting down younglings and arranging transport off-planet, somewhere safe. During the night, he's too busy to think, too busy worrying and working to brood. During the night, he's got nothing else to do, and loss tears at him like hooks in his skin.

Obi-Wan is dead. It's his fault; if Anakin had been there, he wouldn't have died, wouldn't have been taken by surprise. Nothing's ever been able to hold off the two of them when they're together. If Anakin hadn't been so blind, he would have realized what Palpatine was and none of this would have happened. There have been great purges in the Jedi's history before, but nothing like this. The clone troopers are dragging children off the street and slaughtering them like animals. He watches on the HoloNet as A'Sharad Hett is executed on the steps of the Temple. He kills men -- men, not droids. He feels the Force cloud and grow dark.

Celtic Woman - "Beyond the Sea"

Will is looking at her with tears in his eyes, but all Elizabeth can think of is the boy she used to know, the boy who's gone now. They've both changed far too much for them to ever be together again in this world. Someday someone will put a knife through Will's heart, though, and maybe then she'll have him back again.

Regina Spektor - "Dulce Et Decorum Est Pro Patria Mori"

John kneels at the edge of the stream and dips his hands in it, splashing his face with water. He keeps an ear out as he washes the dirt from his skin. He's been on this planet too long; he needs to loop back to the Stargate before the Wraith arrive.

His tags knock against his chest as he drinks from his cupped hands. Not just his tags, though he seldom thinks of them as anything else anymore. Rodney's were the only ones he could get his hands on before Atlantis fell and the Wraith dragged him before their queen, but he carries the rest of them in memory -- he knows the names, all of them, from Marshall Sumner to Radek Zelenka and Teyla Emmagan. He doesn't think he'll ever forget.

He hears a hum in the air. He's cut it too close; the Wraith are here already. John dries his hands on his pants and rises silently, drawing a plasma rifle off the sling on his back. Thirty-eight minutes.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] limmenel, you'll love this: there's something kind of cool about overhearing a guy on his cell phone say, with a fairly strong New England accent, "Yeah, yeah, like half my guys are in jail right now. You hear from Bobby? Is he there?" Also, I have been reasonably well informed that the Mafia has a fairly strong presence in Providence. (This is not even considering the biker gangs, which is...okay, dude, why biker gangs?)

Awesome.

... ENVY!

:D

Haha, that would be an awesome conversation to overhear!

It would have been cooler if he was, like, a Val Constantine-ish type. Instead he was like the Sonny Sassone of crime, only not quite as cool.

Aw, how disappointing. Was he at least good looking? Because Sonny Sassone? Ew, not so much.

Mmmh, I want a guy like Val. Only, y'know, twenty years younger.

No, he was, like, the punk type. Pants down past his butt and all that. *sad* On the bright side, my first thought upon overhearing that conversation was something along the general lines of, "Oh my God, I've walked into one of my own fics."

Mmm, Val.

"Oh my God, I've walked into one of my own fics."

The next time you walk into one of your own fics, aim for the Rokassa one, cause space travel wins over mobsters.

Okay! I'll hold out for getting recruited by the government to study alien cultures, because that is totally more awesome than the Mafia.

And here I am telling you New England/Boston is perfectly safe and not to worry. *sigh* ;)

(This is not even considering the biker gangs, which is...okay, dude, why biker gangs?)

Migratory creatures, native to New Hampshire. ;)

The Mafia is clearly everywhere. But is it the Irish Mob, or the Italian Mob? (I know little of the organized crime here, anyway.)

It's not the organized crime I'm worried about.

They're everywhere. It's really freaky.

I think it's actually the Italian Mob in Providence, but it might be both. I know Boston has both.

Well if you end up in jail, then clearly you're not organized enough ;)

It's also near a holiday, which may be why they're around in such numbers.

I suspect it's both, and it just depends on where you happen to be in Providence.

But lots of mobsters end up in jail. Maybe the organization got busted.

I happen to be at Brown. How many mobsters hang out at Ivy League universities?

Maybe. Could've been a fight, a drug bust, whatever.

If you see Whitey, say hi to him for Massachusetts. :D

Everyone knows mobsters go into the family business, and they don't have a major for that. Yes. (Business doesn't count.)

Maybe a history major? After all, if you don't know history, you're doomed to repeat it...

Economics, maybe.

Archeology could be an appropriate one. All that digging. 'cept like as not, if you're a criminal, you want the past to stay properly buried.

Maybe ART HISTORY. So they can forge stuff! (Or maybe I just want them all to be art history majors so the cops can laugh at them and be all, "Dude, you're a lib arts major.")

PoliSci, maybe.
