So there's a girl in my school -- band member, sophomore, Creative Writing Club, basically a mini-me -- who, as I just found out, is also in fandom. HP fandom. Well, everyone is in HP at some point, you all know how that goes. We're babbling happily on about fandom, this and that, you know -- we got in about two years apart, but when we were more or less the same age -- and she asks The Question: "Are you into slash?" Wary pause. You know how these things go. "I'm a slasher, yeah." "So am I! My sister's into femslash, but I prefer slash. What's your favorite pairing?"

GUYS. REAL LIFE SLASHER AND FANDOM MEMBER. I told her I was on LJ, but I have as yet refused to give out my username. Not that I've put anything really weird up lately, so I may eventually.

She's Remus/Sirius and Snape/Lupin -- argh, argh -- but when I said I'm James/Sirius OTP, she stopped, thought about it, and went, "Oh, yeah, I get it, that makes sense too." AND she's Harry/Draco hardcore, too.

Small, small world.

Oh, yeah, I hear you there. There was a girl in my workshop at Brown that was a ficcer too -- she mentioned that she wrote for "Nightmare Before Christmas", of all fandoms, and I had a minor implosion of, "Me too! But not that fandom! I do CSI:NY, and Star Wars, and Pirates of the Caribbean, and Harry Potter..."

Plus, you know, if you're talking to someone else in fandom the slash question will eventually come up, which is always a fun, awkward moment of horror.

Yeah, but I've found that most people who know what fandom is and don't do slash usually have nothing against those who do... I mean, most fandomers are totally not homophobic, from what I've seen. So I've never had that awkward silence, though I'm always hesitant to ask merely because of the social stigma.

Oh, yeah, totally. But I've noticed a lot of the time that people just on the edge of fandom are usually the het shippers -- when I first got into fandom, I tried to get one of my friends into it, and she was freaked by Draco/Hermione kissing. So, you know. Can be awkward, especially if you don't know how far in someone else is. At least you know they probably won't know what slash is if they're not relatively far in, because it's not as obvious as saying, oh, I don't know, het.

Yeah, that's totally true. I came in shipping Harry/Hermione (ohgod, my brain, it hurts), but very quickly switched to Harry/Draco.

I got out of D/Hr during the Great Hiatus between GoF and OotP, and into H/D at about the same time.

I was into D/Hr for about a week. Then I discovered Cassandra Claire and the Draco Trilogy, and started reading the fics her friends wrote, and bam, slash.

I was into D/Hr for a long time. I switched to H/D sometime while DV was putting out chapters, and was bitterly disappointed when it was D/G instead of D/Hr or H/D. I mean, seriously. Come on.

Haha, I never got very far into the third story. But yeah, D/G? Really now! :D

So, I'm watching CSI: NY repeats on TV, and it's the episode where Stella's a suspect in that Philly PD investigation... do you think that letting her friend go will ever come back to haunt her?

DV was good, but I like to forget the last chapter ever existed, because she built and built and built -- and then I don't think the end worked all that well. But that's just me.

God, I hope so. I was thinking about it the other day, and remembering that basically nobody in fandom noticed when it first aired, and -- god, I hope so. I hope at least a ficcer notices!
