bedlamsbard: natasha romanoff from the black widow prelude comic (my business is to create (girlyb_icons))
Hey, did y'all know that we have actual canon on Narnia's Golden Age of Sail? I...uh, did not. (Besides the Splendor Hyaline, I mean. I suppose I shall have to work that into the Royal Narnian Navy, though I don't know how that pleasure ship is going to go next to the big Narnian warships like the Rising Sun, the Quickkill, and the Sword of Morning. Splendor Hyaline just doesn't quite cut it, you know?)

Anyway, there is a line in VotDT about "the cogs, dromonds, carracks and galleons which Narnia had owned when Lucy and Edmund reigned there under Peter as the High King," which of course sends me racing to Wikipedia. Bah. My Narnian ships are much more sophisticated.

The only reason I was looking at VotDT was to see if they canonically said what Terebinthia's ruler was -- I have it as a prince in Coastwise, but I thought it might be a duke, but it turns out that it's a king, well, whatever, thirteen hundred years have passed, he's upgraded himself.

Well. I hadn't realized they put actual distances in VotDT. (Also, they completely bashed in my Terebinthian geography, but bah to that anyway-- you would not think this would be possible, given that Lewis devotes all of half a sentence to it, but you haven't seen my Terebinthia yet.) But then, on the other hand, they don't actually say how far Terebinthia is from Narnia, so for all I know, my two weeks from Cair Paravel to the Port of Paradise (entirely constructed, not even remotely canon) may be great! Just fine!

After all, it's not like I didn't take the distance from Anvard to Cair Paravel and jump on it a lot, and that is actually in canon, instead of just heavily implied.

As well as, you know, all that other stuff from canon I kind of blatantly contradicted. Like the incest. And the conquering. And the ships. And the countries I made up. Also the incest. And the history.

I am, however, amused to note that the Dawn Treader was set upon by Terebinthian pirates before Edmund, Lucy, and Eustace joined up. Do you know why I find this funny?

Osumare Seaworth, fleet admiral of the Royal Narnian Navy, former pirate, and Peter's lover, is Terebinthian.

Thank God I'm around to amuse myself when I blatantly ignore canon; no one else is likely to. This is why I write movieverse, kids! (Although sometimes I, uh, ignore that, too. Look, my view of canon is kind of sketchy. There is a slight possibility that I write with a comic-canon mindset, where there are about a million different versions to pick and choose from.)

In other news, Coastwise proceeds quite well; I find myself wondering when I consider this less self-indulgent than Four Things Greater. Maybe because it takes place in a setting that is, you know, actually canon? Although Four Things Greater actually takes place (partially) in Narnia, and also included more canon characters. Hmm, well, a great mystery.
