possibly I am Eeyore
Sep. 4th, 2010 03:38 pm*flops* The world hates me today. I went to Borders because I have a 40% off coupon, then spent the better part of two hours there trying to decide what to buy, then ended up not buying anything, although I think I'll go back tomorrow and possibly buy this book. I was looking at a couple of knitting books, but nothing really jumped out at me, and there are so many good free patterns out there. There weren't that many cookbooks that really caught my attention, and I'm kind of hesitant on buying history books now; I got burned really hard this summer because of Water and its ilk, and I'm now at that stage where, with most of the periods I'm interested in, I know just enough of it to have formed my own opinions and am cautious of authors I don't know. What if they hate the Byzantines, you guys! Or think Athens was the greatest thing since sliced bread! What if they don't appreciate the Roman Empire for being fucking awesome! Also I don't want to shell out too much money for something I'm not sure about; the two books I was looking at really seriously were The Grand Strategy of the Roman Empire and The Grand Strategy of The Byzantine Empire, because I've read the Roman Empire one and trust Luttwak -- oh my god, y'all, he is not an ancient historian, but he is a military analyst, and he is amazing, and I want both books so much! Only I don't have time to read them, even for class, because neither one is relevant for my classes right now, but all military history is now judged off of Luttwak. *starry eyes* However, I didn't buy either one right now because see again, time. I looked at Lindsey Davis and Ellis Peters, but I just ordered The Silver Pigs off ABE Books and I think Tilton might actually have the first couple Cadfael books. I still haven't read Waterloo, but I'm not really in a Cornwell mood right now. There's a new Stirling book out too, but if I see one more vampire in my books --!
I am mostly really sad because the coupon goes till Monday the sixth. Stirling's new book, the one I really want, comes out Tuesday the seventh. Have I mentioned the world hates me?
Then I went back to campus, stopping by Milton H. Latter public library on the way (for the first time!) only not only is Milton currently under renovation, it is also closed because the air conditioner (!) is broken, which is pointless, and carried onto Tulane, whereupon I arrived and thought, hey, I'll stop by the bookstore, because I really need hangers, I'm still living out of a suitcase because I can't hang up my dresses and skirts. Only none of the hangers were the right color and all the hangers were too expensive, and there wasn't a price tag on the Black Death, which cheered me up for a while before I realized I didn't know how much it cost. Then I thought I'd get a smoothie, only the smoothie place was closed (or at least there was no one there). Then I thought I'd go to the library and look for the Ellis Peters books, only the outgoing doors were broken, so I veered away and went back to my apartment, running into Texas, New York, and Chicago on the way.
Chicago is not here this semester, by the way. Chicago is going to London for study-abroad, but she thought she'd come down to visit New Orleans and everybody here. Oh, and in other news? The dorm across the street from my apartment complex had a pipe burst, forcing them to move all the residents out for a short-to-long period of time, and also closing down the computer lab, the technology shop, and the coffeeshop, which are all also in the building. Some of the residents went to a hotel (paid for by Tulane) and some have been moved into other dorms. I know. Apparently there was so much water it was pouring out of the windows, which I did not see. Hopefully the poor residents have insurance on their belongings.
Also, I just checked my e-mail, and got a package notification from mail ops. Mail Ops closed an hour ago, and since Monday is Labor Day, they won't be open until Tuesday. It's either my genmaicha, The Silver Pigs, or A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, all of which I COULD USE RIGHT NOW.
However, I am watching The Dizzy Sheep like a hawk. (If anybody wants to buy anything and doesn't have a count, let me know! I have a referral code that will give you 10% off your order!) Later I shall pick up some Blue Moon Fiber Arts yarn, because it's not like I don't already have enough yarn to last till the apocalypse.
*sighs* Naturally, I only end up owing people money when I have no cash. (Well, that's a lie. I have two dollars in cash. Two dollars is somewhat less than helpful when I owe eight, though, and it is so not worth it to go to the ATM, which will charge me to take money out because my bank is not a local and/or national bank. (Well, my bank is a local bank, it's just local to someplace NOT HERE.) Hopefully she can wait till tomorrow, when I can go to Whole Foods and get cash back?)
In conclusion, I made the mistake this summer of falling in love with my hometown, and as a result am very homesick for the first time in a while. (And the Rodeo Parade is today back home, and I miss the Rodeo Parade, so much, I miss the Fair, which is the single biggest event in my hometown, and this is the second year in a row I've missed it, and before that I hadn't missed it since 1995. When I was five, by the way.)
