Currently filling out the profile on TulaneRoommateClick. Here's the thing: do I mention that I'm in fandom? I mean, if nobody knows what that is, it doesn't matter, right? But I could end up with a fannish roommate, so I should put that out there, right?

Anybody want to weigh in?

Having a fannish roommate could be a REALLY bad thing, though... a lot of people in fandom are really scary, especially (not to stereo-type, but it's so true...) things like anime and manga fandoms. You'd think being in university would make them more mature, but I've learned from personal experience that it really doesn't.

It could end up being really awesome, but it could end up making you want to kill your roommate... it's a 50-50 chance.

This is very true. *worries* I ended up just tucking away "I'm in fandom" in the middle of a paragraph about things I like, so...hopefully no one will notice? I don't know.

What [livejournal.com profile] limmenel said is true.

To be really vague since (even though it's a long shot) this is public, I let someone know I was fannish because I was excited to have another fannish person around, then I discovered said person was frighteningly immature, so I am cringing in anticipation of future RL interaction.

On the other hand, you might end up with someone really cool. *shrug* The sad thing about college lottery roommates is that it's a crap shoot anyway you cut it.

I wish you luck though.

See, I've run into other fannish people in RL, but that's only after we've already known each other for a while. So.

Silly college.

Maybe you could just casually mention, 'I'm a big fill in the blank fan.' That might be enough to show what you're passionate about without leaving yourself completely and obviously prey to the overly scary fandom type mentioned by the previous two respondents here.

I ended up just talking away a fandom mention in the middle of a paragraph about things I like, so hopefully if they get that far it won't be so hard to figure out what I'm fannish about. (i.e. television fandoms, specifically crime dramas and sci-fi)

For all you know, the person you meet could just randomly pop the fandom question like I did that one time. It all really depends on what you end up talking about, really.

Yes, but...we'd already known each other for, like, a year at that point. You can predict reactions, then.
