One of my goals for this summer is to clean my room. Now, I can see my floor, which is good, but since I'm going to college on the other side of the country, I really do need to clean my room so I can, you know, live in it when I get back. So what did I do? Take pictures. (Of parts of my room. The messiest and most interesting parts.)

bedroom 062008

Some of that is clutter from when I pulled everything out of my purse (the tan and orange bag that's kind of slumped over) and suitcase (not pictured) before I went from Japan, some of it is what I pulled out of my purse and suitcase after I got back from Japan, some of it's detritus from high school, some of it is the pile of books that I have no shelf room for. (Look at my shelves. I have my CDs on the middle shelf, and then more piles of books on the other shelves.) There are also various knick-knacks on my shelves (as well as ALL THE BOOKS). On the wall, we can see the EHS Fall Sports calendar...from freshman year. On the opposite wall, we can see the side of the Raiders of the Lost Ark poster I got from Disneyland a few years ago. On the floor, we can see part of the chest of doom (we will see more of this in a few minutes) and some of my knitting. That would be a washcloth, a half-finished shirt, and a, like, quarter-finished Dark Mark illusion scarf. Also, if you look closely in the lower right corner, you can see the boxset of the Chronicles of Narnia next to my desk (not pictured).

A better look at the chest of doom! I actually have stuff in there, but almost everything is on top of it. And by "almost everything", I mean books, papers, more books, more papers, some computer cables, a box of tissues, SGA "The Rising", all three Star Wars prequels on DVD, hte MLA handbook, the empty case for the Chamber of Commerce gift certificate I got from the Band Parent Group, more books, story notes from middle school, the manuscript of the film I wrote back in seventh or eighth grade, more books -- the guide to AP U.S. Government and Politics, anyone? -- some handmade maps for the epic fantasy novel I was writing back in middle school (there were light and dark elves! It was An Epic), and various other crap. Above that, you can see a horn (from France, I believe), some Mexican dolls my Japanese grandparents sent me), and the poster for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe that came in the Seattle paper one day when I was in eighth grade. I was so excited about this! I bounced up to my friend Ellora at lunch and said, "Ellora, Ellora, they're making a Chronicles of Narnia movie!" because she seemed, of my friends, the one most likely to have read Narnia. She actually hadn't. I actually love this poster. It doesn't have any of the actors in it, or Aslan, just a sunrise and a sword and the title and (you can't see this) across the top, "There are a thousand stories in the land of Narnia...The first is about to be told." Let me just say so much love. Also, another shot of my large bookshelf. This bookshelf holds (from top to bottom): first shelf, Dennis Lehane, NY vanity license plate that says NYPD (this is actually from before I got into CSI:NY), The Lions of Al-Rassan with Perdido Street Station (neither of which I have read) on top of it, both on top of a Lost poster from when it first came out (I don't watch Lost and never have, by the way), Carol O'Connell, Last Streetcar to Elysian Fields (read it, didn't care much for it), Michael Crichton, Murder and All that Jazz (anthology of jazz-related mystery short stories), and in front of those, another book I haven't read, The Angel of Darkness. Also on this shelf are my green iPod mini and $2 bill that WSU sent me. Next shelf down: CDs, picture my grandmother painted, pile of TPBs on top of The Last Gangster (bought while I was writing the Bardverse hardcore, never read), my police research books (again, these were the CSI:NY days), a notebook from elementary school, iPod charger, cell phone charger. Next shelf down: Harry Potter series concealed by stack of books just brought back from Japan, George R.R. Martin, large empty space where the Chronicles of Narnia boxset goes, Wild Cards, Duncan Preston and Lincoln Child, Naomi Novik and Temeraire. Last shelf: Star Wars, LotR, and Titanic making of books, a book about ghosts in DC, sports books, wild pseudoarchaeology conspiracy theory books (I like Graham Hancock, thanks), books on the British Empire (like 'em, just...haven't read 'em), book about WWII that I haven't read, Little Women, Tale of Two Cities, Tarzan of the Apes, Shogun, Great Expectations, Johnny Tremaine, Carry On, Mr. Bowditch, Swiss Family Robinson, Amazing but True Animals (with the exception of Shogun, all these I have read), some textbooks that I don't use and am not sure why I have, a big book on dogs. At the front: Golden Fool on top of the World Almanac for Kids 1999 and Madeleine l'Engle.

desk 062008

My desk! This is actually one of the cleaner parts of my room, although it's currently cluttered. Computer, notebook, knitting, stack of papers, iPod on top of Prince Caspian soundtrack on top of iTunes giftcard, everpresent Burt's Bees lipcream (because otherwise I peel all the skin off my lips and I'm really tired of bleeding everywhere), my broken lucky charm that I got on the day I left Japan from a family friend (ever wonder if it's really that easy to break a jewelry chain. Yeah, it is), tape dispenser, hair thing I don't use, stack of lanyards on my bedpost as well as a horn and something that may be a survival...thing. Ahem. In the back, my bed, as well as a mirror and two LotR posters. What you can't see in this picture is the print of the carousel unicorn and the kitten by at flower vase. NO REALLY. Ahem. I hate changing things.

There is a whole 'nother side of my room, but I did not take pictures of that. Perhaps I should have, because then you would be able to see my unicorn poster, my Babysitters Club poster, my Star Wars calendar, my laundry basket, my pile of sweatshirts, my Smoky the Bear tracks of wild animals poster, my mirror, my stuffed animals, my 4-H ribbons, and my Paul Revere poster. I like to think of myself as a very diverse girl. You also cannot see my stack of knitting stuff, including the yarn just bought from Japan, or the pile of stuff by the bottom of my desk, but I will take pictures of this when I start cleaning my room.

And for more picture goodness, I know I'm always interested to see what other people have to say about their writing styles, so I thought I'd show off.

ungentling lyrics
"The Ungentling of Queen Susan", version 1.0

I was desperately trying to fill up the last page or so of my notebook, but I'd just about burned up on Spaceforce and I didn't want to write fic in that notebook. I'd typed the first part of this up, but wanted to work on it at school, where I only ever handwrite, so I printed it off. My handwriting is not generally this messy (you'll see in a sec). You can compare this to the final version and see what changed. The rhyme scheme, for one. (Picture taken on top of my lovely Dell Inspiron 1200.)

call lyrics
"Prayer for the Return of the High King", version 1.0

This was written on the back of the "Ungentling" sheet, and it didn't turn as well (I had to rotate the image), so I apologize for that. Again, you can see how it changed from the final version if you want. You can also see the beginnings of the meta analysis. Off to the side, you can see another piece of Lost Narnian History, the prophecy of the centaur Andrikidis. In the lower left corner, you can see the address for Tulane's Office of Undergraduate Admission. (I had to send in my final transcript. I had no other scratch paper.) Again, let me note that this is my messy handwriting.

notes

New sheet of paper, same style. I was in school! This was my last day! I was still desperately trying to use up my notebook -- I had about half a page -- but damned if I was going to write anymore Spaceforce. Random snippets of Narnia fic. First snippet is from Long Forgotten Wars. Second one hasn't been placed or used yet. Third one is Unredeemable in its entirety. I have not idea what the last half piece of dialogue is; it's probably Peter. Let me note, one last time, that this is messy handwriting for me.

notebook

This is my original fic (NOT Spaceforce; this is the novel that's based on Narnia). This is how I generally write: one side of the page, pencil, handwritten -- this is my neat handwriting. Also, dude, my handwriting's fairly distinctive: check out my E's and F's and uppercase G's. And the L's in the messier handwritten pieces; I, uh, don't cursive my L's when I'm writing "neat." I'm also the only person I know who can write in italics (lower right corner; "Kavan Peter Prendergast", the, uh, Peter character. For reference: Max is a Lucy-type, although not really except in age, Alec is the Edmund character, and the mentioned but unseen Paulie is a Susan type. And the viewpoint character, Will, doesn't really have a parallel in Narnia). Hey, and if you look to the upper right, you can see my knitting! And to the left, my iPod!

Okay, now that I've bored everyone to death -- Japan pictures coming, uh, sometime! Two pieces of Narnia fic in progress (working titles: "Once More for the Ages" and "Till Human Voices Wake Us", because apparently I will not tire of using pieces of T.S. Eliot poetry for titles)! -- I will, uh, be going.

Oh, well, I suppose if you're still here, or if you skipped over the cut-tags and focused on the word "Narnia", I can tell you that I've been amusing myself by thinking of the Pevensies' various misadventures from the Golden Age. And what it would look like on the back of a book.

These are dark times for Narnia. Peter the Magnificent, the High King himself, has gone missing on a diplomatic mission to the neighboring country of Lasci. While friendly relations between the two nations are fraying rapidly and threaten to disintegrate entirely, Queen Susan, King Edmund, and Queen Lucy come up with a daring plan that will take Edmund and Lucy into the heart of Lasci on a search for their vanished brother. But there is more afoot than meets the eye...

Your writing. So neat! Mine's just... scrawl. Whiplash and uneven. (I have a fascination for seeing rough-draft hand-written stuff.)

*laughs* Everyone I've ever met has told me that my handwriting's really neat; apparently that applies to the Internet as well.

I think it's so cool to see how other people write, just because it differs so much from person to person.

I posted some scans of my handwriting an age of men ago, but it hasn't really changed much since then.

I rather like your handwriting! Now, my really messy handwriting -- I haven't thrown out my school stuff yet, so I'll take pictures of my timed essays from AP English. Now that's messy, at least for me.

(Oh, and for kicks, we could look at the notes for my original novel. That would be what I fondly like to call "obsessive-paranoid.")
