Oh my God, I just figured out what happened to Narnia after the Pevensies left. It is not pretty. Let me just say that the words "civil war" and "outside invasion" don't quite sum it up.

Oh, Narnia. No wonder they're pissed thirteen hundred years later.

I always figured it had to be hidden canon that the place fell apart after they disappeared. The conspiracy theories alone about who killed them, *are* they dead, where'd they GO if not, did they abandon us, etc, would have divided people. Then you add in the fact that not all Narnians are nice or good, like the Hags & the Werewolves, some of the dwarves, the whole mixed lot who followed the White Witch...many of them live a long time...and they'd want to take the country back. You can probably throw in some general panic & stupid behaviour because of it, too. That's just some of the civil problems.

No, outside invasion wouldn't have helped AT ALL.

My Narnia -- well, Peter's Narnia at the end of his reign, is a much bigger empire than what's shown on the map (which I choose to believe is the Narnia of Caspian and his descendants). So first the giants decide they don't want to be part of Narnia anymore and start to invade the North, then the islands break off, then there's a lot of rumor and innuendo that the West (traditionally a more wild and savage place than the rest of Narnia) did away with the Pevensies, then the countries to the West (at least one of which had been conquered by Narnia and after Peter vanished, promptly restored its own independence) invade Narnia and Archenland goes, "Hey, internal problems! Can't help right now!" so they don't even have allies. The country completely fragments, because there are a thousand different factions fighting for control, and hey, probably famine and plague too. Narnia ripped itself apart from the inside out; by the time the Telmarines arrived, it wasn't even that hard to conquer.

There's a reason I've dubbed the 300 years after the Golden Age and before the arrival of the Telmarines (this is movieverse, where the Telmarines have been there longer than in bookverse) "the Dying Times."
