So yesterday I went to a friend's house to watch a movie, talk about our vacations, and just generally hang out. (This is a big deal for me. I don't generally do...um, socialization.) She got back from Hawaii the same day I got back from Japan, albeit about twelve hours later, so there was plenty to talk about as far as vacations go.

Our original plan was to meet in town and go out for ice cream and a movie, but there isn't anything showing we both want to see. (I told her that she'd better choose, because if she left it up to me, it'd be Prince Caspian at 6:30, which isn't a matinee. She pointed out that she'd already seen Prince Caspian, and I said that so had I -- twice. She wisely pointed out that she had movies at her home. And ice cream.) We watched Over the Hedge, which was tres cute -- uh, as you may be able to tell, we have very different tastes in movies; we're slightly more likely to agree if we go to her house rather than mine, because I like cute movies fine, I just don't own any. (Perhaps next time I will take pictures of my DVD collection so y'all can see what I mean. Or, uh, wait. Y'all know what I write; I'm fairly certain this extends to what I watch as well. Perhaps the word "action" could be included in the genre description. "Cute" and "action" seldom mix. Unless we're talking about cute boys with swords, in which case we get...um, Narnia. Where was I again?) Also, there was ice cream. Followed by Battleship and other boardgames. (No, seriously, I had never played Battleship before yesterday.)

As per usual, my track record for finding herself remained unbeaten; I went past it, turned off Dry Creek, onto Faust, onto some other road, did a three-point turn, got back onto Faust, got back onto Dry Creek, turned into her cul-de-sac, and double-checked to make sure that was actually her car in the driveway. This is better than the last time I went to her house, where I actually ended up back in town (let me point out that neither she nor I live in town, alhtough we live in different parts of outside-of-town) before I finally managed to find her house. (I SUCK AT DRIVING. When I went to a different friend's house before Prom, I took about three wrong roads and took about three U-turns before I finally found her house. I am getting really good at U-turns. Well, they're technically three-point-turns rather than U-turns; I don't like U-turns.)

And then I came home. The funny thing about me and Riss is that we have the same birthday...in the same year...AT THE SAME TIME. We're practically twins! We actually do have fairly similar mindsets, if you don't count the fact that I'm much more laidback (except when I'm much more highstrung; dont'cha love me for that?) and we're interested in completely different things. (She's going to Central, I'm going to Tulane. She's a dancer, I'm joining the Air Force. Etc., etc.) Anyway, I was glad to see her; I haven't seen her since graduation. We saw each other a LOT during the school year; we had three classes with each other, and one of them was PE.

That was just to let people know that I do, in fact, have an actual life.

In other RL news, I am currently reading Apocalypse 2012: An Optimist Investigates the End of Civilization (I have the British paperback edition, picked up at Narita Airport; it has a different subtitle), which is bundles of fun. I actually find this sort of thing really interesting; as some people may have noticed, I'm actually pretty interested in conspiracy theories of the, uh, historical/archaeological/geological type. (I will take this opportunity to kindly point out this is why I'm probably not going into archaeology; I'd be laughed out of the academic community.) I'm not really into the alien thing, though; I have Stargate and, oh, yeah, my novel for that. I like to think that I'm not that nutty. This is probably also the same reason I like reading the meta on [livejournal.com profile] hp_essays, especially the conspiracy theories. (Yes, even now that the books are over. Hell, maybe especially that the books are over; it's not like they're going to be jossed anyway, and after so much fic it's sometimes hard to remember books 5-7 are the "real" versions.) I'm generally not as interested in the character or shippy or "what the hell was JKR's message, anyway?" types of meta; I just really like the conspiracy theories. (Which would be, uh, worldbuilding, plot, this is what should have happened, etc.) I mean, this is true in the HP fandom, at least; it differs from fandom to fandom.

Oh, look, I left behind RL and moved on into fandom. Oh, well, carry on. I'm currently reading barely any fic, which I think comes from the fact I'm writing a fair amount of it; when I was writing my novel I was reading mountains and mountains of SGA fic. (No, seriously: my del.icio.us started in January (January 1, to be exact; one of my New Year's resolutions was to be more organized), which was when I put aside all my fic and started working fulltime on my novel. There are mountains and mountains of SGA fic there, but barely anything else. I mean, yes, there are, but the sheer load of SGA fic compared to everything else is...um, a lot. This is, as far as I can ascertain, because SGA, of all my fandoms, bore the greatest resemblance to my novel -- military sci-fi space opera; it was basically...no, I don't even want to go there right now. I don't want to think about Spaceforce -- and I couldn't see the relevance of anything else. For the record, I watched mountains of television this past year. Mountains. Two or three hours a night. Of course, I write while I'm watching TV.) Anyway, I can't read most fic or meta in the same fandom I'm writing in because the author's view of the characters and the world usually clash with mine. It's been a while since I was hardcore into a fandom -- um, the last one must have been Star Wars, but ninety percent of everything I wrote was AU then, and I wasn't writing as much, and before that there was CSI:NY, which was even farther back -- so I'd forgotten how that went. I'm never one to search out fic or meta anyway -- I quickly develop very firm opinions on character and universe -- so it's not that big of a deal. Besides, I'm indulging my internet reading time by reading knitting blogs and HP conspiracy theories.

Currently writing Golden Age (or Great Summer, if you prefer) era Pevensie fic; I'm kind of tickled by the fact that I had to write out a timeline to make sure everything lines up. (The Long Winter, followed by the Great Summer/Golden Age, followed by the Dying Times and the Great Autumn, followed by the Second Summer...) And it's interesting, because I'm bouncing all over the timeline -- "Till Human Voices Wake Us" is set fairly early on in the Pevensies' reign, first or second year, while the adventures in Lasci are later, and the time Peter gets possessed by the White Witch is later still. And, of course, anything that takes place during Prince Caspian is much later -- and I get to see the way that the Pevensies are changing during their reign. Peter especially, since he's my preferred character, but Edmund is my other favorite viewpoint character, and I've got a decent feel for Lucy now too. Less so for Susan, but I think just because of her nature she's less likely to get into the kind of hijinks Peter does. And Edmund's just fun to write. I haven't written much Lucy yet, but I've done enough mental plotting that I've got a pretty good feel for her, I think. (I think she may be the POV character in Peter's White Witch hijinks; I was going to go with Edmund, but I rather like having Lucy there, since she never had any direct confrontations with the White Witch. Besides, I didn't want to write Edmund's internal struggle. And she'll be around for the Lasci story, which will probably be told mostly from Edmund's POV, although I'm vaguely considering using Peter's and Susan's as well; I'm not very fond of switching POVs. And part of "Till Human Voices Wake Us" is from her POV; that story switches between Lucy in the present and Edmund in the past, along with a little Peter in the past too.) I'm looking forward to doing Narnian historical documents too. (And by historical documents, I mean...ahem. Well. You know the Dying Times? Yes.)
