oh, technology
Jul. 8th, 2008 01:00 pmAm now on Facebook because, uh, Tulane wants me to be, so there I am. This more or less translates to me bopping around going, "I am so confused and have no idea what I'm doing, but hey, I know these people! FRIEND FRIEND FRIEND."

Date: 2008-07-08 10:14 pm (UTC)It's too hot to stalk anyone.
Apparently Tulane has a club hockey team, but there's no rinks in New Orleans, so they have to drive an hour and a half each way to their practice rink. How sad!

Date: 2008-07-08 10:21 pm (UTC)(or maybe I just hang out in the wrong parts of it), I have not met any Internet pervs. In six years. (Hi, let's go back to the days when I happily bounced around the HP fandom telling people that the reason I didn't have an account was because I was only twelve, and couldn't register until I was thirteen. OH MY GOD HOW DUMB DO YOU HAVE TO BE.)
That's scary, what with the price of gas. Poor Tulane hockey team.
Thank you for the graduation card, by the way!

Date: 2008-07-08 10:25 pm (UTC)I just want to give him a big hug and an ice rink. Seriously. Apparently there used to be one in New Orleans, but it shut down (prior to Katrina). Or at least there was one sliiiightly closer. USAHockey did an article on their hardships.
You're welcome! I'm glad you got it. I was afraid your parents would see the strange address and be all OH NOES INTERNET PERV. ;)

Date: 2008-07-08 11:02 pm (UTC)Maybe it MELTED. (Seriously, why did I think it would be a good idea to go somewhere where it's hot all the time? My hobby is KNITTING.)
I have a default lie. My default lie is, "Oh, I know them from one of my summer programs and we kept in touch!" I will probably spring the Internet thing on them...later. Once I no longer live in their house.

Date: 2008-07-08 11:07 pm (UTC)By seventh grade I got kicked out of class once for writing gay porn. It was a proud moment.
Honestly? I wouldn't be surprised. Also: fuel prices affect the ability to run ice rinks. Costs money to run everything to keep it cold (obviously), so, even rinks here are raising their ice time costs. And melting, if they're old enough (say 1980 or before) and the equipment is fucking itself.
I am melting. I cannot imagine being in New Orleans ever.
*laughs* That's a good lie. It's specific and vague all at once. Yeah, I'm sure, "He's a hockey-playing social work major in Boston. And he's four years older than me." will go over real well... : O

Date: 2008-07-08 11:13 pm (UTC)People always think I'm twice my age -- you know, they do the whole, "OH MY GOD I HATE TEENAGERS AND WHAT ABOUT YOU?" and I go, "Well, I'm sixteen, so..." (Or eighteen, now. I was exceedingly happy I turned eighteen shortly after the whole LJ-various-things mess.)
I missed the yahoo groups stage of fandom (this was a topic on one of my lurker journals, so it's relatively fresh in my mind); I was messageboards for HP, and then I went straight to LJ, though I missed the migration by a year or so.
I cannot imagine being in New Orleans ever. I sit here and stare at my knitting and go, "I am not going to Wellesley why?"
And I met him on the Internet! That's the kicker, probably. Although I'm sneakily sneaking in references to people I met online for various things.

Date: 2008-07-08 11:19 pm (UTC)*lolz* Yes. I never really picked up on that in the yahoogroups/my younger daze, but I definitely see it now and it's just point blank obnoxious. I mean, if fandom had decided: "You!" *pointing at me* "You're a teenager and we don't like you and you'll obviously never improve." then... well. I probably wouldn't have written quite so diligently or as often. I got feedback from -- whatever fandom I was in -- and I could develop my voice in peace with just enough confidence in my ability to keep going. And I had lots of people who were all "It's kind of cool that you're young and into this stuff. Keep it up!" not "All teenagers are useless chatspeak fanbrats who know nothing about sex! RAR." or what have you.
I was on usenets type groups for a while, as I recall (oh, we're harkening to the dark dark days of my youth here), and mostly chatted with people over AIM and ICQ, and then I found yahoogroups and only got into LJ around the middle of HS or so.
Because you like what Tulane has to offer. Except for the oppressive humidity and the hurricanes. Thing. ...oops.
Haha yes that too. At this point while my parents are still suspicious: "And WHERE do you know [so and so] from again? The INTERNET?" they can't do much of anything and have figured out I generally know enough not to get killed.

Date: 2008-07-08 11:34 pm (UTC)Yeah, since the dominant setting on LJ (fandom LJ, I mean) is middle-aged woman, there's a lot of animosity towards teenagers. Occasionally people remember to go, "Except for so-and-so, but OH MY GOD TEENAGERS."
Messageboards was my middle school (literally, started in sixth grade), LJ was my high school (again...freshman year). I wonder if anything new will come up for college?
The horribly amusing thing is that I chose Tulane because it had so much to offer, and now...I have too much stuff on my plate, so I can't do band. (Tulane was the only one of my four finalists that has a band.)
It's a matter of sneaking in the harmless things, I think. "Oh, she just wants to know about ESL..."

Date: 2008-07-12 03:58 pm (UTC)And on a slightly less creepy note, it is absurdly useful for group projects, what with the posting of links and the sending of documents. I've done presentations without ever meeting face to face outside of class. Plus, there is the fun of stalking

Date: 2008-07-12 06:41 pm (UTC)Oh, that's nice, especially if you're as, uh, antisocial as I am. And live on a computer like I do. Wow, now I really sound like a hermit.
