Because I wanted a look at the Narnian army, I watched the second half of LWW.

* Dude, the personalized horn calls are so totally canon.

* Susan's quiver has her initials on the back of it.

* ...I think the phoenix shall have gone extinct by Caspian's time.

* There are warthogs in the Narnian army.

* Okay, good. Movieverse canon gives a distinction between fauns and satyrs: they're different species entirely.

* Heh, mastiff.

* This Narnian army is about twice to three times the size of Caspian's army.

* Peter going for his sword when the dryad comes in! Oh, hell yes.

* Each of the Pevensies' thrones has a symbol carved on it. Edmund and Peter both have swords, I think, though different ones, Susan has a horn, and Lucy has her cordial.

* Huh, Aslan does say the "once a king or queen in Narnia, always a king or queen in Narnia" line. For some reason I thought he hadn't done so.

* *flails* Oh my God, Peter. Hack and bash indeed. And he's good -- he's very, very good.

* Griffins! And leopards! And the White Witch has white tigers! (Narnian Royal Guard! I love them so much, as non-canon as they are. Favorite OCs ever.)

* Okay, so the Stone Table, by PC, is in the How. Is the How built around the Stone Table? And if so, what the hell are the ruins outside the How? Were they built after the How?

* The White Witch's eyes are dead-black in the sacrifice scene, but when she and Peter are fighting, they're hazel.

* The actors who play the elder Pevensies are not my elder Pevensies. (I actually go back and forth on whether my older Peter has a beard or not -- I'd rather he be clean-shaven, but that's just my shallow side talking.)

* *thoughtfully* Cair Paravel doesn't look very defensible, but it faces the sea. (And by PC it's on an island, of course.)

* Mermaids! I'd nearly forgotten there were mermaids.

* Beavers in armor look so weird.

* Seriously, Peter.

Look, I didn't say they were the most coherent thoughts in the world.

It's been too long since I've seen this, so I can't really engage...until I get my speakers working and whatnot. *sulks*

However, I'm surprised to hear about the fauns and satyrs being different species. I didn't recall that at all. It would explain the desexifying of the fauns, then-it's the satyrs who're the naughty ones. *coughs*

I wonder why the griffins only appear in battle. I don't remember ever seeing one just hanging out, only flying and carrying a warrior.

Damn. I really need to see this again.

Yeah, in the movies the satyrs are basically minotaurs with goat heads instead of bull heads. Whatever! New species to have in my stories! (I wasn't sure.)

They've progressed by PC. In LWW they're dropping rocks and getting turned into stone. (There is totally a griffin in "In Constellated Wars," because griffins are awesome.)

I think in the books, and in the BBC movies, Aslan's line is "Once a king or queen in Narnia, always a king or queen." period -- which seems to be part of the allegory, and part of 'once you know and are part of Aslan's kingdom in Narnia, you will be part of Aslan's (god's) kingdom everywhere".

Fauns and Satyrs are separate in most mythologies, if I recall right ... but they both generally look the same. Fauns are typically the "forest spirit" kind of things, but Satyrs are more associated with Dionysus and drunken revelry and being horny and sinful and all that good stuff.

I was never clear on the How... according to Wikipedia: The word "How" derives from the Old Norse haugr, meaning hill. In England, it is a common synonym for a barrow, or earthen burial-mound. and that someone, Lewis does not explain who, would have built the mound around the stone table.

*checks* Huh, you're right. It's Professor Kirke who says, "Once a King in Narnia, always a King in Narnia." Although now I don't remember what the movie said, and I just watched it.

*thoughtfully* Well, there are thirteen hundred years between LWW and PC.

I remember in the BBC movie, Aslan says it during the coronation as well. Do not remember the Disney/Walden LWW, though. (and here I was just at the library yesterday. I could have gotten the books out.)

Wiki suggests "superstitious Telmarines".

Oh, I remember that now. Very clumsy-looking by comparison to what they're doing with the effects now.

There should be more "aerial" types...there'd have to be Talking Eagles, Osprey, Falcons, etc. Big birds that may or may not be able to carry fighters, but who are some damn good fighters in their own right, and fast, too.

And how about Talking Hummingbirds, for messengers? They're so small they're extremely hard to see in flight; they can hide easily in just about any place; and they can travel incredible distances quickly.

Size is good for some things, but Reepicheep and his folk prove that you don't need to be big to be quite effective. \o/

As I understand -- birds can be really, really hard to animate effectively and believably. (anything is, really, but birds. D: ) That's probably why they don't do as many "aerial" animals.

Of course, I'm blaming that on the fact that by PC, Peter knew exactly what every Narnian could do.

Have you read Mercedes Lackey's The Black Gryphon? There are different griffin types there, each breed having its own specialties.

Oooh, hummingbird messengers. *entranced* (I, um, have a phobia of birds, so I don't think of these things.)

Nah, it was definitely the Narnians. There's Narnian cave art inside, for one. And in PC-the-book, it's said to have been raised by Narnians. (I, um, have the books by my desk. For quick and easy reference.)

But they don't even talk about them-and I don't recall them being used in the books. Land animals, and "beings" like dwarves, centaurs, etc, but not flying creatures-or reptilian ones. Like Lewis got caught up in his mythic preferences and didn't look at the actual animal resources you'd have in a *real* land.

Bedlam can do birds in fic, though. :)

If your Peter weren't such a cranky, aggressive, high-maintenance pain in the ass, he'd be dangerously close to Marty Stu territory. *laughs at your obvious fixation on the man...boy...er, man.*

Birds would be very useful. Also, reptilian types-snakes would scare the crap out of people anyways, never mind the talking. (I might have a snake phobia. And frogs. Lizards. *coughs*)

Big-ass Talking Frogs that can jump high, climb buildings, have front "hands" with long, deft fingers, and can swim, too? *raiss brow*

I believe there's an Talking Eagle in The Last Battle -- but on the other hand, Last Battle.

There are talking owls in "Till Human Voices Wake Us." Of course, along with everyone else in Peter's army...they die.

One line I always love in the book? the bit about the pictures being old, but we're older. (I think it's Lucy or Edmund who says it)

Well, it's a good thing he's a cranky, aggressive, high-maintenance pain in the ass with a superiority complex and entitlement issues, then. *grin*

I may have a bird phobia.

Hmm, according to The Magician's Nephew, not all sorts of animals are talking animals. (I totally want to put in a talking snake now, though. And maybe an alligator...)

And I completely blame the cave art for getting me into this fandom.

so basically the satyrs are the ones who went off to get drunk and have sex regularly? I now have images of Lucy looking at the wineskin, looking at Mr Tumnus and going 'hmmmm'.

It's fairly clear in the books that the Narnians built the mound over the Table, especially what with the cave paintings. Not actually explained why - i'm pondering if they did it to hide it from the invaders.

er. talking of the book... the film doesn't include the werewolf biting Caspian. I checked. :mutters: I want the possibility of werewolf!Caspian. Though we don't know if they can transfer it by bite in Narnia.

A Talking Snake and a Talking Frog, working together as a team. The snake doesn't have hands, but *does* have poison fangs and is very fast, with good camaflouge. The frog has all of the previously mentioned attributes, with the "hands" being very important, but needs transport. It rides on the back of the snake. *beams*

We're talking fanfic here. We can totally have other Talking Animals if we want to! It's not like Lewis burdened his creation with overwhelming logic in other respects.

Except it *would* matter if Narnia has the climate to support alligators or not. (I'm from Florida-damn gators, we got.) Maybe in the south, near the Calormene border? And they lie in wait in the rivers as border patrol and EAT trespassers?

I love your Peter, anyways. If he were incapable, it would be insufferable; but since he *can* do everything he thinks he can, pretty much, he's just RIGHT. So HA! *dances on enemies' graves*

Well, Narnia has elephants...according to Lewis. (Which never show up again. *shakes head* Rhinos in the movie, though.)

Yep, that'd be them. And oh, I've seen Lucy/Tumnus before. (sorry bedlam, but I have.)

Ah, okay, I haven't read the books in a long time. Maybe to hide it, maybe, if it's implied as a "burial mound" -- they built it when it became clear that the Kings and Queens and/or Aslan were not coming back. A symbolic burial?
