I am this close to having to draw a map of the Narnian "world", considering that apparently I'm now on to creating countries on the other side of the continent, and I already have to write Golden Age fic with a character chart and a glossary up in separate Word documents.
(Original countries in the Narnian world: Lasci, Belgarion, Shoushan, Natare, Ransky, Resi, Masongnong, Edan, Vandalin, Anskettell, Lycoris, Marinel.)
And let's not even get into the fact that the "Golden Age" section of my character chart is divided into "Civilians", "Royal Guard", "Army of Narnia" (which includes the navy and the Aerial Corps at the moment), and "Foreigners." (Inluding not one, not two, but THREE of Peter's fiancees: numbers three (engagement broken by Peter), five (engagement broken by Susan), and seven (tried to kill Peter, killed by Peter. At the wedding).)

Date: 2008-08-06 05:57 pm (UTC)(My specialty, as far as military history goes, is U.S. Special Forces, mostly in the Middle East. This is because my MC in my original novel is a U.S. Army special forces officer, and said novel was military-based sci-fi, and all I did for eight months was research military history and military memoirs from WWII onwards, although focusing on current conflicts.)
My Peter was an RAF pilot in, I think, 1943.

Date: 2008-08-06 10:26 pm (UTC)I figured he'd be about 18-19 at the end of the war, if he'd started the war at about fifteen. Finish school, join the army (you got into officer training faster as a public school boy who'd *finished* school), complete officer training - Sandhurst said it was 44 weeks but I'd have to check what it was around the end of the war. He'd have gone into some branch of the military automatically due to National Service not ending until '48 even if he hadn't joined up. And you got shipped out by regiment, not individuals, so even if he'd finished officer training in '46-7, there's a chance that '48 would've been his first :cough: battle.
There's a guarantee : from about...1900 onwards, the British Army have not been fighting *somewhere*. Whether it's obscure little peacekeeping missions or actual wars. There's several books that detail all the skirmishes and wars you've never heard of that we were involved in.
Re: random passing pout in your general direction.
Date: 2008-08-06 11:26 pm (UTC)My rationale for him going for pilot training rather than infantry is that, despite his experience in Narnia, infantry now/in WWII is completely different from hand to hand sword-fighting, which is his specialty. Pilots are a little more independent, and there might be a better chance for promotion and advance. And he totally has the attitude for a fighter pilot, too.
