I can't possibly need all this crap. On the other hand, what if I do?

This is just the stuff I'm shipping, by the way. A couple of books, extra sets of sheets, various storage devices, a little bit of yarn so I have something to look forward to when I open the box (cotton and a linen/rayon blend, suitably appropriate for Louisiana weather; I'll leave my 100% wool at home), and extra school supplies, because I am, in fact, going to school. (For me, this is pens, staples, and post-its.) And we have to figure out how to fit pillow #2 in the box, or it has to go in my suitcase too.

This is ridiculous. Why am I not going to Central and living at home again? I could have done that. Hell, I could have gone to the U-Dub and come home every weekend. Well, not with gas prices the way they are, but I could have come home every other weekend. Do you know how much cheaper that would have been? That would have been, like, forty-five thousand dollars cheaper A YEAR.

God, I'm an idiot. Why am I going to the other side of the country again? I hate the world.

My first year of college I went to school in St. Augustine FL. I was also traveling down from NY. I can definately relate to the "why do I have so much stuff." Even though I thought it was a lot all of it was stuff I needed (and it was on the stripped down side of living). The only 'fun' non school related thing I brought down were 3 burned DVDs and my CD binder.
I know I didn't respond on your previous college post but if you have any questions I'm totally here to answer. (I just realized I'm going to be a Junior this year and I have yet to declare my major.)

The main question, at the moment, comes down to, "How many books and movies do I take?" *sigh* My logic brain and my gut are having panic attacks at each other.

hmm, are they books you have already read? Or do you use them sometimes for reference material? I guess it comes down to how many times a week you use a book. If it's used less than once a week I would say leave it home. Worse comes to worse if you really need it (and the internet doesn't have the answer) you can get it shipped to you.
Dunno if that helps you. Ha. I always go to school with no extra books and I think this year I won't even bother with DVDs. Ever since I found watch-movies.net I have been good on the movie front (even with the bad quality).

No, it's just...but my books, even though I know I probably won't have time, and also, my main reading time now is when I'm eating, but my gut keeps going booksbooksbooks!

Speaking as someone who regularly sleeps with at least 5-6 books in the bed, totes a good dozen around in the car at any given time, and whose bookshelves are currently stacked 2 deep...not counting the floor piles, the hall closet floor-to-ceiling pile, the walk-in closet jammed pack stacks and boxes full...yeah, I get you on the "my books, my books!" thing.

There are a TON of poetry sites out there. It's a good way to find new poets, or unfamiliar poems by poets you like. Saves me a lot of money, definitely!

I know there's on-line books, too. Never downloaded them, but I know some people who have and they seem to like it just fine. I prefer holding the book, myself, but if I was desperate for reading material, I wouldn't care.

Yeah, I prefer to have books in the hand. It's why I'll probably never go in for something like the Kindle. And I'm used to reading stuff online -- hello, fandom, six years going on seven -- but books are books. There's something very visceral about them.

Every time I go to my amazon wishlist, which is mostly books, they're trying to push it at me. I like having the actual books. Yes, it's a very visceral, interactive experience, reading a physical book-the feel of the page, the smell of the book, and the memories that these can bring back when you think of it, later. The action of turning the page and remembering where that certain paragraph was located, even.

I can see why some people would like the Kindle. A friend of mine doesn't have space for books, so she'd probably love that, once it gets to a more affordable price; but for me, I don't think so.

Yes, exactly. I'm one of those people who can remember where things are in books (which is why it messes me up when I'm used to reading a paperback and read a hardback edition instead, or vice versa), and you just can't do that with electronics.

I chose to go to university on another continent and it is one of the best things I have ever done. Discovering winter, however, SUCKED. I was that girl who wore a million layers. I was not bred for blizzards!

Ha, I did the exact opposite thing. I went, "I never want to see snow EVER AGAIN," and I'm going to school in the Deep South. (Of course, this means I can't wear any of my winter clothes. *scowls*)
