I don't even know why I'm crying. At least my roommate isn't in the room; I think she's in class.

Brit Lit was fine -- in fact, I think it's going to be pretty fun. My professor seems a little bit like a spaz, but she's really enthusiastic about the subject. (OH MY GOD I HAVE TO READ PARADISE LOST AGAIN KILL ME NOW.) And yes, I got comments about my name during attendance. (Katrina. In New Orleans. Aren't I fabulous?)

Went to meet my parents, and went down to Magazine Street to look for khakis. Couldn't find any in my size, so I kind of got the pants my mom was wearing, which happened to be khakis, and she bought new ones. I think this will probably be the only time in my life a size 0 is too big for me; the store sized oddly.

Said goodbye to my parents and went back to campus (I don't know how far I walked, but probably at least a mile, maybe more), where I got a smoothie the size of my head, which I'm currently drinking. No, I didn't eat breakfast, and I probably won't eat lunch until after my theatre arts class, but the smoothie is healthy! And tastes good, and I can pay for it with my Tulane card. I should probably not try to live on these things, though, because I don't think I have enough Greenbucks on my card for that. (The Tulane card does everything. Greenbucks are different from actually putting money on the card; that's just...uh, putting money on the card. Greenbucks can only be used at certain places on campus, including the food court in the LBC. Where the smoothie place is. There's a sushi place too! Which I should probably, uh, eat at, since New Orleans apparently has really good sushi.)

I think I'll start putting a book in my purse when I go to Bruff, because if I'm reading then I won't feel so completely alone. I just wish I had more books, because I only brought a few. Maybe I can get them shipped, which is the alternative to actually spending money. Or I could read my textbooks, but where's the fun in that?

Thank you to everyone; I don't want to think about what kind of wreck I'd be if I didn't have you guys.

Chin up, everything's gonna turn out fine. I know it doesn't seem like it now, but it will, I promise.

As opposed to paying for either shipping or purchasing new books, check out the local library, and the campus library - free books are the best! They usually have movies as well.

Library! Libraries are good. I don't know why I didn't think about that. And I think they have music, too.

One: don't panic. New Orleans is probably the safest place hurricane-wise now - they don't want a repeat of Katrina, so everyone'd get out pretty quickly.

Still, if you're really worried, just think basic safety:

Have a plan of where you'd go, and how you'd get there.

24-72 hours worth of food and water, along with basic essentials (clothes, toilet paper, duct tape, basic knife, first aid) on hand (preferably in a backpack or something you can grab easily). Put the items in ziploc bags (waterproofing, and condenses space). Never underestimate the importance of dry underwear.

Have a one person contact (example.... hurricane comes, you get all call to your great aunt mable, who's job it is to pass information to the rest of your friends and family).


Again, the school is gonna take care of you - don't worry at all. I come from a paranoid family. Our family motto is "Be prepared". My personal motto is "better safe than sorry, and better paranoid than dead!"

So ignore me.

Or, y'know, don't, if it'll give you peace of mind.

And you know, just keep going with the deep and relaxing breaths. And don't feel bad about feeling bad - it's a very stressful thing and you just have to get through it the best you can, until things start to feel more settled (and they will. Routines are good things).

Routines are excellent things. I love routines. It's too bad about the LOOMING HURRICANE-SLASH-TROPICAL STORM.

Aw, after I posted that comment, I saw that you'd updated about that, and advice about routines seems pretty stupid next to incoming hurricanes.

They already left. My dad offered, but -- Tulane evacuates at a Category 1 with seventy-two hours notice. We're not there yet.

I'm sorry that you're having such a hard time right now, I can't imagine how difficult it must be. I hope you make lots of friends soon and that things start looking up. I'm glad that at least Brit Lit was alright, your teacher sounds like she knows what she's doing, at least.

Hooray for the khakis and for books, allthough it sucks that you didn't bring many. Maybe you could borrow some from your roommate if she has any interesting ones?

My roommate does not, apparently, share my taste, but I know one of my friends shipped twenty-five books from home.
