Things that are frustrating: when this Narnia map is the one I have to check, because it's the movie map and it has more detail, and this Narnia map is my default one because it's the one I have in hard copy, but neither of them match up with my mental map of Narnia (well, my Narnia). Argh. Argh. All I want to do is name the damn river that the Pevensies cross in LWW -- and that at least is clear, I'm pretty sure it's the Great River from the map (which is a stupid name) -- but I keep getting distracted by how much the other landmarks don't match up, because, just, no. No. Also, my Narnia is about twice as large in area (not counting everything Peter conquers) than what the map shows, so...it hurts.

If I could draw, at all (or better, at least, it's been a while since I made maps, and that was for my fantasy novel, the one with the elves), I would draw my own Narnia map, and it would make sense, and have Belgarion and Shoushan and Natare and all the rest of those westron countries on the border, and the giants and Ettinsmoor up north (there's a moment of cognitive dissonance in the movie, and I'm waiting for PC to come out on DVD before I expound on it further), and the islands in the west, and just...yeah. One of these days, I should probably do a world map, too, or at least figure out where all the rest of those countries are.

No, I'm sorry, today is going to be the day of a thousand posts, and none of them fic. *sad face* I'm debating if I want to step back from "Old Timber", leave it alone for a bit, then come back and rewrite from the beginning (SHOOT ME) or just keep writing to the end and then rewrite...and rewrite...and rewrite.

And somewhere in the middle of this I have to do homework. God, I hate school.

argh, don't you hate those little details. when you know no one cares that much, but you just want it so you can keep it in the back of your head. it's pretty funny though how you're worrying about canon now when the discussions in the comments have already several times progressed into speculation of your speculation. don't worry too much about it! most readers won't care :). i'm impressed by the effort and detail you put in to your writing; you should channel the energy into a published novel one day.

taking time off is always good. writing somewhere new is also good (outside instead of in your room or something). basically, give the brain a change of scenery.

There's this, which actually does not help your matching up problem, but does show a little more to the west.

I just -- argh. Maps are, like, canon-canon, like eye color, only apparently not here. Geography is, at least; maps are an interpretation.

*sheepish grin* My senior project that I just did this past year to graduate was a 100K science fiction novel (http://bedlamsbard.livejournal.com/tag/spaceforce). And if you think I'm bad with Narnia, I was a hundred times worse with Spaceforce. Narnia is a walk in the park compared to Spaceforce; I don't have to think out politics in two galaxies, and weapons, and do military and sci-fi research, and worry about a deadline that determines whether or not I graduate high school. See here (http://bedlamsbard.livejournal.com/236000.html#cutid1) for how I'd do research. (This was so I could write a sex scene, by the way.)

Going back to New Orleans tomorrow! Which means warm weather. Mmm.

Maybe I should just give you the link with all the maps:

http://fantasymaps.wordpress.com/2008/01/23/narnia/

The first one, I've had as a poster since I was a kid, so that's the Narnia I picture most.

Oh, huh. I'd completely forgotten about that blog, from ages ago.

You know, at this point, I really have no idea how I came up with the mental image of Narnia that I have, since my mental map of Narnia is...different.

history is like fanfiction for life. IT IS JUST FICTION, life belongs to itself, history makes no money plz don't sue it!

ya i have seen bits and pieces of that back when i started stalking you. what are you going to do with it?

hooray for warm weather! i envy that. the autumn is settling in up here and you can tell, 'cos of the rain. MAN, after shmoozing at an alumni networking event (i dread these things, but i did get a referral and a business card!) and getting blisters on my feet because of my HORRIBLE SHOES, it RAINED. i had no umbrella. i walked one block in my Shoes of Torture before deciding to go barefoot the rest of the three blocks home and showed up in my dorm lobby looking like a respectable businesswoman who had been thrown into a river. then i took a shower and scrubbed my feet.

Yes. Yes it is! Ooh, I have never heard it described that way, except yes, yes very much so, because history is written by the victors and we always see what we want to see, not necessarily what was, and oh my God you have no experience with Stargate Atlantis fandom, do you? Because there is a fic I want to rec to you the concept of which you would, I think, absolutely love, because it ties in with this.

Leave it alone until I've got some distance on it, then rewrite it until it's coherent and I have a plot that makes sense and says what I want it to say. Then try and sell it.

Oh, man, I don't think I could ever go barefoot like that. I put on sandals to walk down the hallway in my dorm. And it's not a bad hallway, mind.

no, i only know that the dude from macgyver is in it, and he is doing some guy with glasses, and there is a masculine woman type also. they travel to other worlds? that is all i know. i watched the movie like yeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaars ago. tv fandoms fail to keep my interest for very long. partly i'm anal-- i like having all the facts before i fic. partly i'm lazy about catching the new episode week to week. i like my canon all in one place so i can screw with it better. my most prolific fandoms have been movie fandoms: boondock saints, x2 movieverse, narrrrrrrrnia.

y'know, i was expecting new york to be more cramped and dirty, it's actually very wide (such wide streets! lots of open space!) and quite clean. also, when i think city i think manila and jakarta and bandung, which are QUITE cramped and QUITE dirty, so... that's where my expectations come from. i had already suspected i would end up walking barefoot as i was walking to the event itself... then leaving the event, i was like, "well, i'm already soaking wet, what am i bothering with dignity for?"

Wrong Stargate. That is SG-1, and this is Atlantis. Basic premise is: Earth uses the Stargate to travel to the lost city of Atlantis, in the Pegasus galaxy, and then they have adventures. There is Lt. Col. John Sheppard, who is Air Force, and Dr. Rodney McKay, who is a brilliant physicist, and Teyla Emmagan, who is an alien, only human, and Ronon Dex, who is also an alien, and then there is Dr. Elizabeth Weir, who is the leader of the expedition. I'm telling you this because I'm going to rec the fic at you: Written by the Victors (http://www.trickster.org/speranza/cesper/Victors.html), by [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza. I'm pretty sure it's understandable without having to have an in-depth knowledge of the canon, or maybe any knowledge at all. But it's beautiful, and brilliant, and an intersection of history and fact, and it's fannish historiography, and oh my God, go and read it immediately.

*cough*

I love KeyNote. It's freeware (or, um, actually, it might be shareware, but hell if I know the difference) and can be found here (http://www.tranglos.com/free/keynote.html).

I should really do a pimp post for KeyNote sometime, because it's exactly how my mind thinks. Er, if it means anything, it's only for Windows.

I'm a medievalist :D Actually I think I'm more of a literature scholar than a historian, but that's by accident of my field (Anglo-Saxon studies, taught in English departments instead of history).

Next place your wisdom gets pimped out will probably be my medievalist blog, but that's pending on me thinking of something Wise to say in response, so as to make up a whole post.

history gets everywhere! i just started my program for an MA in sociology and there's a lot of history of economics and history of philosophy there. truth be told, twas narnia gave me a fun excuse to think about how beautifully screwed up history is, and now thanks to this course i'm taking i get to think about it for homework. yay!

HAHA. what is it isn't. we study how things shape society and how society shapes things. my sociology of science and technology course studies how politics and culture influence the advancement of culture. in my undergrad studies i studied a bit of the sociology of medicine, and the different ways different cultures and epochs conceptualize the body and disease, which influence how that disease is treated. blew my mind, studying the sociology of science. science likes to tout itself as being rational and objective, but it carries around a bit of baggage as well.

sometimes i say i majored in cultural relativism.

too invested in schoolwork is also when you're reading marx's writings on the follies of resolving the religious with the secular and mentally building narnia drabbles around the concepts.

oh, good greif no.

For example, I realised the other day that my VOTD fics are all rehashing the same fundamental questions of masculinity and heroism that Sir Gawain and the Green Knight poses, with the added bonus that mine doesn't have homosexual subtext. More like SUPERTEXT.
