bedlamsbard: natasha romanoff from the black widow prelude comic (battle (timeless-x-love))

I may -- may -- have figured out one of my major blocks on "Be Like Water," and I think it solves multiple problems. I mean, it makes Reepicheep look pretty reckless, but that's canon. And I have a pretty sincere belief that all the New Narnians have pretty big problems with following orders, and they may have even bigger problems having orders given by a woman, I don't know.

Yeah, I was sitting in class today listening to my prof talk about Utopia and writing Peta and Caspian's first kiss, why do you ask?

And this is on the heels of not four, not five, but six thousand words of part one of "Dust in the Air." (And it's probably going to increase, because I'm about halfway through it on a quick edit. This story is going up in parts, baby. Part one should be up tonight. Yes, I still blame you, stop asking.)

Homework? Who needs it! Not that I have ten pages of Japanese and reading to do for Greek Tyranny and Democracy tonight, or the Nicole Cooley reading...

but where is the susan/lucy! do they get no love?

ohohoh, in my theatre class last week we were reviewing medieval theatre, and my prof goes, "Now, you'd recognize St. Peter because he'd be holding keys, and you'd recognize St. Lucy because she'd be holding a plate full of eyeballs..."

I was waiting for Susan and Edmund, but they didn't join the party.

i never have written susan/lucy. hmm. the saint names lewis did on purpose! st. lucy killed herself rather than give up her virginity, and i forget exactly what st.s peter and edmund did. i think st. ed was haranguing someone for being a traitor at one point.

and the white stag appears to you when the Otherworld is near.

LEWIS. focusing on all the wrong subtext.

susan/lucy: susan is flushed from too much faun wine and peter and edmund have vanished -- peter gone early, so the festival can continue in full swing, and edmund just gone. lucy is feeling rather like she's glowing, moving a little more carefully than she might otherwise. susan's hair is nearly red in the firelight as she laughs at something tumnus has said. lucy bends over her, grinning, and susan automatically tilts her head up.

*googles* hmm, St. Edmund (http://saints.sqpn.com/sainto10.htm) (or Osmund) isn't all that interesting. St. Edmund Arrowsmith (http://saints.sqpn.com/sainte26.htm) is a little more interesting, but not all that much. Oh, here we go: St. Edmund of East Anglia (http://saints.sqpn.com/sainte08.htm): model ruler, concerned with justice, beaten, whipped, shot with arrows, and beheaded, and patron saint against plague and of kings, torture victims, and...wolves. Huh, and some of his representation includes a severed head between the paws of a wolf. CREEPY.

And then there are ten million Peters. Which ones are interesting...oh, I rather like Blessed Peter Armengol (http://saints.sqpn.com/saintp78.htm) -- he took the place of 18 captured and endured all the torture for the entire group AND SURVIVED, including being hung. He was a badass. Oh, here is the original St. Peter the Apostle: ...ahahaha, he is the patron saint against frenzy. O REALLY? also butchers. and he had the keys to heaven.

oh, here is blessed lucy of...narnia (http://saints.sqpn.com/saintl2r.htm). vaguely interesting for the HAVING VISIONS part. oh, this is the one my teacher mentioned, lucy of syracuse (http://saints.sqpn.com/saintl01.htm), sentenced to FORCED PROSTITUTION, who had her eyes torn out. patron saint of authors and writers!

there are no susans, but here is a vaguely interesting saint susanna (http://saints.sqpn.com/saints38.htm).

ahahaha i did not know that about the white stag and the otherworld. OH LEWIS.

"oh sister, what cares have we about the games little boys play?" susan giggles, to which lucy replies, "no care, none."
"well," says edmund. "carry on, then." he steps aside and watches his sisters stumble arm in arm through the corridor and turn the corner, their breathless laughter fading.
edmund shoots tumnus a sidelong glance. "how much did they drink?"
"as much as i did, sire."
"ugh. they didn't...? they haven't been up to...?"
"nothing i wouldn't have done myself, sire," says tumnus affably.
edmund leers at him, but the faun is scrutable.
"...i'm going to bed," edmund finally says.
"a wise idea," tumnus agrees. "good night, your majesty."
"shut up, tumnus."

OMG THERE IS ALSO A ST. EUSTACE
this came to light when i was googling the white stag: "Even in early Christianity, the legend of St. Eustace contains references to the white stag. Eustace, a Roman centurion, is out hunting one day and spots a stag wtih a cross between his antlers. According to the story, Eustace converted on the spot, renouncing his Pagan ways."

BLESSED LUCY OF NARNI WTF?! fucking NARNI?!?! wow. and wow, have you scrolled to the bottom of this?

of COURSE there isn't a saint susan. hmm. ever get the feeling it was a good idea lewis kicked the bucket before he got to 'redeem' susan? he'd said that her story wasn't yet over.

there's a bunch of white stag lore it seems, and so far i like best this version.

oh edmund. I DON'T EVEN WANT TO KNOW indeed.

lucy's fingers brush her hip and susan turns her head sharply, flinching away. "we can't," she says, eyes flickering to their mother in the kitchen. "not here."

lucy digs her fingers into the folds of her skirt. "why not?" she demands. "peter and edmund --"

"we're not peter and edmund," susan insists, and turns away.

St. Eustace (http://saints.sqpn.com/sainte17.htm) -- thrown to the lions, which played like kittens around him! and then he was cooked to death in a bronze bull.

...that is fucked up, dude. OH C.S. LEWIS NO. It's the new OH JOHN RINGO NO (http://fanlore.org/wiki/%22Oh_John_Ringo_No%21%22)!

oh and OF COURSE BY SCRUTABLE i meant INSCRUTABLE

and then they weave daisy-chains and practice archery probably. picnics in the woods where lucy's still fearlessly exuberant enough to proclaim "no boys allowed!" (she takes advantage of how, in their eyes, she will always be their little girl.) and susan smiles in that gentle way that could mean "oh, let us humor our lucy" but the picnic had been her idea.
and peter's like take so-and-so with you at least but lucy's like NO and susan laughs and says we'll be fine.
and later when lucy kisses her in the shade of a willow, susan says, "won't the dryads...?"
"let me worry about the dryads," says lucy.

i have never heard of "oh john ringo no"! for a second i thought the beatles AU was back. LEWIS YOU CRAZY. AND YOUR MIDDLE NAME IS STAPLES. so take that.

susan had told peter that he shouldn't take lucy to battle with him; she was too young. "no younger than ed was," peter replies.
"but we couldn't avoid that," susan had said, and peter had raised his eyebrows. he didn't answer.
later, there are splashes of blood in fine arcs across lucy's armor and face where the wolves have broken through to the archers. susan wipes them off with her thumb. on the battlefield below, the sunlight glints off peter's shield as he helps his brother to his feet.
"i don't think it was that bad," lucy says.

I lurk in slightly more mainstream (uh, for fandom, anyway) fandom circles, so I get wind of stuff. *shrug*
