Went down to the French Quarter after classes got out today (I'm not going home for Thanksgiving, which means I will be here, and that means writing and reading time) with a couple of friends.

Oh, New Orleans. Narnian-Telmarine-Calormene Cair Paravel is going to be heavily influenced by New Orleans and New Orleans history, I think. (I...I would try for explanations, but I don't think I have any. You really don't want to see Cair Paravel's version of the French Quarter, and I'm not talking about the modern French Quarter, I'm talking about the French Quarter where down by the waterfront you could walk through mud and the muck and the grime, where the criminals were afraid to go, where life was nasty, brutish, and short. It, like, physically pains me to write Cair Paravel like this, but how can I not? Really now. Because this isn't the Cair Paravel we saw in The White City. This is the Narnia of the Golden Age. This is Narnia the way these things happen: this is the way life and history go.)

(Naturally, this is, of course, the area which we shall see, not Cair Paravel's version of the Garden District. Although I'm sure Cair Paravel!Garden District is hella pretty.)

Wait, where was I? Oh, yes, things that I saw in the Quarter that I want to put in Dust somewhere. (*shrug* I seldom see things and want to put them in Water, but I see things and want to put them in Dust all the time.)

Venetian carnival masks (except I kind of did that already, and I don't think this would actually work in Dust. I mean, it might, but I kind of doubt it. Well...hang on. Calormenes might have a custom like that, maybe)
puzzle boxes (Susan is so getting one)
candy (pralines omg! I have never actually had pralines before today. SO GOOD)
street markets (although Seattle's Pike Place Market is actually so much cooler than the French Market, and I have heard it from actual New Orleanians! But I was in New Orleans today, so)

In other news: I am working through Criminal Minds S4, or what there is of it so far, and I am loving it. One of my favorite crime shows ever, and I hadn't been watching it this season because CBS doesn't stream it. But I have found it elsewhere. *smirk*

Things that I did not see coming, part fifty-six in a series, Water: Peta is terrified of being captured. She'd rather fall on her sword than be taken alive, and Caspian is going, "I do not approve of this! Really, maybe I can talk us out of this, I am the crown prince here, you know, theoretically they should listen to me --" Telmarine officer: "...yeah, you're not of age yet, so my oaths are to the Prince Regent, not you." Caspian: "DOES NO ONE SEE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE FACT THAT YOU'RE POINTING WEAPONS AT YOUR CROWN PRINCE?" Telmarine officer: "You have been bewitched by some Narnian witch-woman! Lord Miraz only has your best interests at heart!" Peta: "YEAH I BET." Caspian: "We really need to talk about this --"

*cough* I am paraphrasing.

*laughs* That's pretty much how the scene goes, too, only wordier.

Susan is so getting a puzzle box.
