and the madness continues...
Dec. 12th, 2008 11:09 am*blink* Wait, schools were dismissed because of the possibility of snow? Clearly I grew up in the wrong state, dudes, because my junior year every other school in Washington was either delayed or cancelled because there was snow up to our necks and Ellensburg was pretty much, "NO WE SHALL PERSEVERE. BRING ON THE PAIN! WE MAY NOT HAVE POWER, BUT WE WILL HAVE SCHOOL." *cough* To be fair, the power had gone out in the other power company, not the one that had the school district. So only about half the students had no power.
(I am not kidding, though. They closed the friggin' highway; there were students who lived in other towns that couldn't make it to Ellensburg for school; there were schools that missed upwards of a week of classes, but did Ellensburg cancel? NO. Did Ellensburg delay? NO. Did I still have my 7 am zero hour class? YES. And last year one of my friends got stuck on the other side of the mountains for a week when they closed the pass; that kind of sucked for him.)
The one and only time I remember actually having school cancelled was my freshman year, on a Tuesday after a three-day weekend; it wasn't because of snow, it was because the roads were too icy for the school buses to run. And we still had pep band that evening; there was a basketball game.
OH DEEP SOUTH WHY SO CRAZY?
(Did y'all hear about the furniture store in Amite whose roof collapsed under eight inches of snow, though? Madness! And, uh, bad?)
ETA: Snow at Tulane! When it was snowing, I was...uh, asleep.

Date: 2008-12-12 05:46 pm (UTC)The funny thing is that here there was barely enough snow to make it worth the name; you could still see the grass. And yet there are pictures of people sledding down the levee walls by Lake Pontchartrain! This is nothing for a northern girl.

Date: 2008-12-12 06:22 pm (UTC)my school is MA hasn't had a snow day since THE NINETEENTH CENTURY.
i mean, sucks for me, you know how i am, with the cold. BUT STILL.
okay, i have 3 pages of garfinkel analysis to write in 3 hours, which is totally doable since my outline IS SO AWESOME, AND THEN, after that, i will READ YOUR URBAN POVERTY AND HOMELESS PEOPLE AND COLONIAL OPPRESSION AND BASICALLY WHAT I MAJORED IN IN COLLEGE YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY save for the bit about peter gambling shirtless in underworld bars, that i didn't major in ALTHOUGH I WISH I DID BECAUSE IT WOULD HAVE MADE MY LIFE.
and then i will sleep, omg.

Date: 2008-12-12 06:35 pm (UTC)i hated snow so much i came down to louisiana. AND IT SNOWED HERE BEFORE IT DID AT HOME. WHAT.
YAYNESS. it doesn't need that much of a beta, i just wanted to make sure i hadn't gone completely off into the deep end. also because i realize now that i actually wrote in some guy snorting
cokesilvermist off a hooker's tits. so the deep end thing? TOTALLY POSSIBLE.(no subject)
Date: 2008-12-12 07:01 pm (UTC)AND still, half the staff is at my office. I only came in because there was heat and power here. :D (oh, okay, work too.)
But, yeah, one of my staff recently moved up here from the south and her kids were so happy at the ice storm because they figure they won't have to go to school again until after Christmas (previous snow experience in the south has taught them that SNOW = TWO WEEKS OFF!). They are going to be so sad on Monday morning.
People in the south, such wimps.

Date: 2008-12-12 08:37 pm (UTC)Yesterday was fun, if just to watch my Arizona roommate run outside in a tank top and shorts, and without shoes. LOL. Too bad I had to go do the whole final thing, and the snow decided to be done when I came back out. But the snowman's still (partially) standing in front of Newcomb Hall. Good times.

Date: 2008-12-12 08:39 pm (UTC)Yeah, I woke up, puttered around for an hour or so, looked out my window to see if it was raining...and there was snow. On my campus.

Date: 2008-12-12 09:27 pm (UTC)Yea, I was sleeping, or trying to, and someone ran past outside screaming about snow loud enough for me to hear it on the third floor. I was like, huh? I'm from Colorado originally, and they just had their first snow two weeks ago. I think we've actually had more inches here. Craziness.
What year are you?

Date: 2008-12-12 09:28 pm (UTC)Yeah, I'm from the east side of Washington State, and we haven't even had snow yet back home. I fled Washington to avoid snow, what is this nonsense? *laughs*

Date: 2008-12-12 10:02 pm (UTC)I figured you had to be a junior or younger, just from the way you were talking about Gustav farther up. My roommates and I are all seniors, and we were flipping out during Gustav, thinking it'd be a Katrina repeat. We literally packed up everything we owned and got the hell out of here as quick as possible. 'Course we looked silly once Gustav turned out to not as bad as your average New Orleans thunderstorm, but still.
(Please excuse my terrible grammar. I had to get up at 6 for an 8am final. Ugh.)
