Man, I don't even know what I'm doing. I'm googling Islamic and Persian and Moorish architecture to try and describe the castle of Cair Paravel, because I'm trying to figure out how the Calormenes changed it from the castle that Caspian originally built, which has elements of both Telmarine and Narnian (using the original castle of Cair Paravel here as a basis) architecture, but has had additions built on in the three hundred years since. But meanwhile it's been taken over by the Calormenes, and they're obviously going to be doing something.

...I need more color. It's grey and boring. That's a Telmarine thing -- I can't see the Calormenes keeping it that way or the Narnians standing for it.

Maybe just the outside is colorless?

...dude, if I have to figure out a floorplan of the castle, I am going to be so pissed. I mean, I sincerely doubt I am, not that much happens in the castle and I haven't even done a floorplan of Cair Paravel (the original), and I write there much more option. I have, what, three chapters that involve the castle? Possibly more.

Wait, now I appear to be looking up Spanish architecture. Well, at least that's closer to what the Telmarines would actually have been building. Dude, I don't even need to know this stuff, except apparently Peter's on high alert.

...I need to fuck around with my icons again. I feel like I hate them all, except for Susan. Why are there so many more happy Susan icons than there are happy Peter icons? Or at least ones where there's warmer shading for Susan.

ETA: IT IS WINTER. OF COURSE THERE IS NO COLOR. Also, why are there no Cair Paravel icons? I don't want to dig around in the icons of four years ago because I will never find anything, but still.

Holly, evergreens, mistletoe, poinsettias...all winter plants. I'm sure there's more, and there might also be native Narnian plants that would grow in winter, or Telmarine and/or Calormen varieties that adapted to their new environment. That's the gardens...and there could be *indoor* plants, as well, nurtured by Cair Paravel into blooming out of season.

Marble comes in an amazing variety of colors and patterns, and so does stone. Brick, stucco, thatch, wood...all multi-colored. Iron railings and scrollwork, with copper or brass touches.

There's always marquetry, paint, enameling, inlay...perhaps?

You don't have a lot of happy Peter icons because you love to torture him, bedlam! What use for happy!Peter?

This is true, but the good news is that scene is over and Peter is glowering at the Calormene prince thinking, I don't even know you, but I'm going to kill you. And then he's going to the dungeon. So not much there...

PETER IS A CYNICAL, BITTER BASTARD. Like, seriously. It's depressing the hell out of me; I'm promising myself happy Golden Age fic at some point in the near future. I mean, aside from the porn.

My off-the-top-of-my-head thought here is that you definitely want to be looking at Spanish stuff, because you get Moorish empire bleeding into Christian - and not just that, but heavily influencing the Christian kingdoms of the time - and that seems like the real meld of stuff you want. Al-Hambra. Seville. It'll at least give you ideas.

You're not going to get anything deeper than that because it is currently too hot here to even try to think. OMG.

That's what I was thinking. I got bumped around on Wikipedia from Arabian to Islamic to Moorish to Spanish and then I threw up my hands and went, "OH MY GOD PETER IS NOT REALLY GOING TO NOTICE THAT MUCH."

So I have heard. I didn't know I knew so many Australians until they all started complaining about the heat AT ONCE. *grins*

I watched this documentary on the development of Spain through the Moorish period there, and it was really fascinating, the mixing of cultures. The Khalif was sending architects to other European courts, because they were such a shining light of, well, everything. It was a really interesting documentary. Not least to see where GGKay picked a lot of his inspiration for Lions out of history.

It's HORRIBLE! Epicly horrible. And that's in degrees C - 44C is 111F; 29C is 84F and that's what it was overnight. This is going to last until Sunday. I'M MELTING.

OK, I'm going to shut up now. Or rather, I'm going to go find somewhere with fucking aircon omg.

Oooh, that does sound interesting.

...I thought you typed -44C and that was a reaction of, "wait, I didn't think Fahrenheit and Celsius were that different," and then my brain started working again.

I want the heat to come back. Yesterday it was a nice 75F; today it was about 50F. New Orleans is a CRAZY TOWN.

Spanish sure, considering it was the Telmarines who built it, but I don't know if you need to go into arches and courtyards and what not. How long have the Calormenes been there? And I mean firmly seated in power, not worrying about attacks, and with enough resources to do rebuilding. Because if they're still actively pursuing Narnians, depending on the scale, they might not be too focused on structural redecorating, although there'd be new tapestries and carpets or what not.

Other than that, the only thing I remember off the top of my head is that there was an inhibition against depicting living creatures in art/sculpture/whatever, so there was a lot of intricate geometric work.

Peter is not noticing that much. Well, I mean, he is, but not that much. And after this, he's going to the dungeons, and I sincerely doubt there's all that much going on there.

Also, he is FREAKING ME OUT. The bastard.

Get'im high.

If you think about it, that might be an actual logical thing for the Calormene questioners to do (if they're not the smash and bash type). Call him down, get him confused, that sort of thing.

I mean, it probably wouldn't work right on Peter, but he might be a little calmer for you to deal with.

I'm not actually sure I can write a story wherein Peter gets drugged twice.

And yet... *thoughtful*

Do they describe it much in Silver Chair? I know it has an owlery. Or whatever you call a tower that GIANT talking owls roost in.

Huh, I don't know. I suppose I should check. (Just like I should check HHB to see what they say about the Calormenes, so I'm not making stuff completely out of thin air, just mostly.)

Personally, I think the Calormenes would go overboard with color. They seem...flamboyant like that. XD
