bedlamsbard: natasha romanoff from the black widow prelude comic (pavlov (girlyb_icons))

Guys, I am so tired, you have no idea. I have been on my feet all day, between the field trip and the trip to Borders I went on with my friends (long story short: streetcar didn't come. Walked back to Tulane from Louisiana Ave., which is about a three hour walk).

I also got hit on at Borders, which is an absolutely new experience for me, and I'm almost too tired to be traumatized anymore, so expect a panicked entry tomorrow demanding to know how the hell normal people react to this sort of thing. Meanwhile, I'm just going to sit here and either read or write...one of the two. I really want tea, but I have to wait for it to cool before I drink it.

Getting hit on isn't such a bad thing. Most of the time I take it as a compliment (I'm bi though, so a girl hitting on me is just as complimentary as a guy).

On an intellectual level, I get that. On my lizard hindbrain level, I'm kind of freaking out, because I think he thought I was older than I am. Also, new experience. (And what is it with that Borders? Last time we were there we got approached by a guy who thought we could hook him up with some weed.)

At least you don't get stares when you walk into grocery stores wearing funny costumes-- Wait. Only I get those.

Ah. Well, this is New Orleans during Mardi Gras season; I don't know if this city blinks at anything...

Depends, was this welcome getting hit on, or was this "you are creepy and I don't know you, why are you talking to me?" getting hit on?

Because if it's the first, you just kinda awkwardly stutter your way through it, and if it's the second, you have a sudden attack of "Aha! I see a friend I must talk to RIGHT NOW, over on the other side of the store and away from you!"

I...don't know? Like, I think he thought I was older than I am, of the, "I saw you earlier and I think you're very attractive; I'm guessing you're not married since you're not wearing a ring," type. I mean, he was nice about it, and he could clearly tell that I was just really confused by the whole experience. I got out of it that he's a pharmacy student at another university in New Orleans.

Well, at least he's a student. The only thing I can think of to do then, when you aren't sure yet if you want to encourage/discourage them, is to somehow bring age or school or something into the conversation. High school band or living in a dorm or something.\

Afterwards, when you are at home and no longer freaked out, you can just be flattered by the attention. But then, I'm one of those people who are amused by people in cars honking at you.

Pharmacy means grad student, though. *flails a little* And I said that I was history at Tulane, but --

What do you do when a guy asks for your phone number?

Well, there are a few different options then.

If you like him (or might like him, if you knew him for more than two minutes):
A) Give him the number. Remember that this number cannot be ungiven.
B) Suggest facebook. Facebook is a wonderful wonderful tool where messages can be rephrased before sending and people can be unfriended if necessary. (Also, depending on the difficulty of spelling/how common your name is, they might find you anyway.

If you don't like him:
A) Say no (you don't know him that well, don't give it out to strangers, whatev)
B) Lie, and give him a completely random number. Probably one off your actual number, so that if you're asked to repeat it, you can. (Works if you say no, but then they keep bothering you)

He asked for my number and ended up getting my (school) e-mail, which probably broke some kind of etiquette or whatever, but dude, I was panicking.

that's totally workable. I'm just not a fan of phone numbers to people you just met because you can't pretend they don't call you. (Especially if your name is in the "leave a message" bit.

Also, you get my kissy icon in celebration :)

That too. I'm not a fan of phone numbers either, but mostly because I'm just plain bad on the phone.

AGH.
