bedlamsbard: test: research is what I'm doing when I don't know what I'm doing (research (girlyb_icons))

Okay, so: we are finishing up flooding in Natural Disasters (the last thing we're doing is asteroids and meteorites and the like, and I'm fairly certain that this is not going to strike any bunnies. Um, pun not intended) and I had a thought. I've talked about the flooding after the Long Winter before, but this is Dust. I heart Dust. Dust needs more trauma like I need a hole in the head, but hey, who knows, maybe I'll pierce my ears again this summer. (I doubt it. I never wear earrings anyway, and I only have one hole in each ear.)

It is the end of winter, beginning of spring in Dust. This has been made all kinds of abundantly clear by my not so subtle seasonal symbolism (okay, this one I can blame on Lewis). What happens in spring? Snowmelt! Off the mountains! (Look, I live in the valley, I know this one. Did y'all see the way Ellensburg flooded in January?) The Calormenes have been clearcutting the forests. There is a lot of silt and so on and so forth in the Great River because they're using to transport the trees they've ripped out of the earth. Probably around ninety percent of the population of Narnia (and a large percentage of that is probably is in Cair Paravel, which is on both sides of the river) lives within twenty miles of the Great River or one of its subsidiaries. I'd have to check to be sure if I actually said it, but the winter was one of the harshest in years.

This is all stuff that is actually in Dust so far. (Except for the winter thing. That, not so much.) And you know what's going on at the beginning of Dust 13? A HUGE FREAKING STORM. Well, and a fight, but it's not like that's going to affect the weather at all.

And then today in class we watched a movie about the Great Flood of 1993.

Look, I don't even have to bring in the river gods and the really pissed off naiads and other freshwater Narnians in. Even though that is what Lewis would have done. Wait, this is what Lewis would have done. Except without the actual flooding causes bits, but the clearcutting and the river god and perhaps I am mixing him up with Tolkien here, but then again, book!PC.

I WAS ALREADY GOING TO HAVE THE GREAT FIRE OF CAIR PARAVEL. NOW WE ARE APPARENTLY GOING TO HAVE THE GREAT FLOOD OF NARNIA.

Why am I even bothering with the battles? THERE ARE NOT GOING TO BE ANY BATTLEFIELDS. THE ARMIES ARE GOING TO DROWN AND/OR BURN TO DEATH. Or starve! Since there will clearly be no crops because they WILL ALL DROWN. And even if Narnia wins then they'll go broke importing food!

Except for the ocean. We'll always have the Great Eastern Ocean! Thank God there's nothing serious I can do to the ocean. (I am...actually not planning to have any narrative on the ocean, but gee, we know how well that tends to work out.)

I...kind of want the flood.

IT IS WHAT LEWIS WOULD DO.

...which scares me.

It is probably a bad sign when you look at your source material and realize that if the original writer would have done it, then there is SOMETHING WRONG.

...although. Sacrifices. Huh. *prods*

Not *everything* he did was wrong. I think.

No, definitely not, or we wouldn't be having this conversation. There's a lot of stuff that Lewis did that I like. It just sort of alarms me a little bit when I look at my AU and think, "Oh, hey, if Lewis was writing this he probably wouldn't have done exactly this, and I am trying to fix what I don't agree with. WHAT."

I support these floods, if only for the added angst. There can never be too much angst.

The frantic levee-building! The levees breaking! The water washing across the land! The griffins and hippogriffs carrying Our Heroes overhead and watching the year's crop be washed away, along with, say, the Calormene reinforcements or something!
