More Dawn Treader pics! In which Skandar and Ben Barnes finally make an appearance.
I have no idea what's going on with the flags on the boats there; those aren't Narnian flags, so maybe those aren't Dawn Treader boats?
Caspian kind of looks like a bum, I note.
Also, I am ninety percent certain that no one else in fandom is analyzing the weaponry. It's hard to tell, but in this picture I'm pretty sure Caspian has a crossbow slung across his back, and it looks as if Edmund may have his same old sword back; it's not a Telmarine-style rapier. But the quality's not good enough to be certain, but from the pommel, it looks like it. (No, seriously, Caspian, why were you hauling around treasures of Narnia on the Dawn Treader? Do you have Rhindon and Susan's bow and horn hidden in your cabin too? Please say no.)
In this picture, you can see the swords that the sailors are wearing, which aren't the Telmarine type with the fancy hilt. They look like cutlasses, with a flattened pommel and a knuckle guard, probably a single-edged backsword with a slight curve and a ribbed grip -- closer to a French cutlass than a British one, but it's not an exact analogue for either. The hilt actually reminds me more of infantry swords from the late sixteenth-early seventeenth century. Note that since we can see two of the swords and they're nearly identical, it means someone's manufacturing them and making them regulation. (Probably.) They're using baldrics. We can also see a little more of Edmund's sword hilt, which looks like a straight Golden Age crossguard but could be a basket hilt (probably not, though; I think it's just the angle) and Lucy's cordial. Still can't tell if Caspian's got a crossbow or what, or what the red leather strap is he's wearing over his shoulder, though it looks similar to the ones Edmund and Lucy are wearing. We can't see if Caspian has a sword. Eustace does not appear to have a weapon.
...wait, never mind, I lie; I checked my copy of The Crafting of Narnia and it looks like the sailors are using Telmarine infantry swords. Silly me, I assumed that the sailors wouldn't be Telmarines and thus would have different swords. NOPE.
Not much new in this picture, except! We can see a strung longbow by Edmund. And since Caspian doesn't use a longbow, I'm going to assume it's probably Edmund's. Caspian's also possibly got something on his waist -- crossbow quarrels? Or it could be a quiver that the angle makes it look like Caspian's wearing. (That is not, by the way, Susan's bow; Susan's bow has ivory tips and a very slight recurve, though not enough to give it the name.) There's an enlarged picture here of Caspian and Edmund.
Other Narnian sighting! This picture shows a minotaur at the oars in another boat; that's a real departure from the books. And is that...Drinian? I don't remember from the actors' pictures. He has a slightly different sword, which looks like a Telmarine sword.
Here we can see Caspian is carrying a crossbow! Actually, it looks like the bow part of the crossbow might have been what I took for a longbow earlier on. Uh, whoops. It also looks like Lucy's wearing a sword; I am about sixty percent sure that's not her dagger hilt, since it's pretty distinctive, but it's hard to tell. Also, interestingly, despite the fact that the sailors are carrying Telmarine swords, they look significantly less Telmarine/Spanish than the Telmarines did in PC.
Still cannot see Caspian's sword. For the love of the gods, people! It looks like he does have a dagger on his right hip, though, which is consistent with PC. (I am actually kind of worried that they'll have him carrying Rhindon. This is why I'm so het up about this sword thing. Also, I just like weaponry.) Still can't quite tell if Lucy's wearing her dagger or a sword. Probably just her dagger, though; I mean, what do you expect?
Now, if only I did this kind of analysis for school. Also, I probably should just give it up and go into military history, you know?
