I think what my roommate did was restore the computer to a prior state, and...it seems to be okay now? And then she installed Glary and AVGFree; is there anything else I should stick on here?

ETA: Roommate (Texas, for anyone who's keeping track) also recommends switching to Firefox instead of IE, which I've been using forever; thoughts? Recommendations?

You might try running MalWareBytes.

And also, IE is a tool of the devil, switch to Firefox!!!

Firefox is made of awesome. Throw in the Adblock Plus addon and the NoScript addon and you're pretty much immune to ads and popups and anything that loading the page automatically runs the JavaScript, and it's only a mild annoyance to have to tell NoScript what sites are allowed to run JavaScript.
