I am pretty sure that the first season of Battlestar Galactica is one of the best seasons of television. (Uh, on the strength of the "33", which I just rewatched, because studying is so passe.)
Anyway, I have been watching Caprica, and am up to episode 3, "Rebirth" -- Syfy does not put up the new episodes till Wednesday, and I realized just as ep 4 came on that I hadn't seen ep 3 yet, alas -- and it is fabulous. I have the vague hope of someday finishing out S4 of BSG, but I feel going back to the beginning is a good start, especially with Caprica on.
I'm really, really liking Caprica. There's just a touch of real sci-fi in the development of the cylons and the slight futuristic touch of the Colonies. It's more a dark, gritty drama than a sci-fi show. Esai Morales makes a very good Joseph Adama, as does the actor that's playing the young William Adama -- I may be stretching it a little bit, but looking at BSG and Caprica and the actors that play the extended Adama family, I feel like there's a fairly strong family resemblance that's a really nice touch. There's some interesting stuff in the series so far about ethnicity and discrimination -- when the Adama family moved from Tauron to Caprica, they changed their name to Adams, and Joseph has started going by Adama again. Also, there are mob connections. Even without all the cylon development that's going on in the Graystone side of things, I would be all over the Adama ties to the Tauron mob.
Also, Polly Walker's Sister Clarice Willow is hot like burning, and I am intrigued by the concept of group marriages. Also, I may have squealed out loud when Sam Adama (Joseph's mobster brother) said, "I used to come down here and try to pick up guys, while my brother got their sisters' phone numbers." (Probably misquoted, but I do not care.)
Zoe Graystone as the first cylon is -- that is amazing camera work, I'm just saying. It's creepy as all. And the dog.
In conclusion, the first three episodes are up at Syfy Rewind. Even if you're completely unaware of BSG, you can watch this; it's designed to be independent of the series, and while it's a nice touch to do so, you don't need to know anything about BSG. Get thee to it now.
