Have been insanely busy because not only is my computer still having minor heart attacks on me several times a day (twice already today; at this point I'm used to it; attempting reformatting over Mardi Gras weekend), but I had three papers due this past week, and finally begged off the last one for a later date (the way the class works, we get four discussion sessions and have to do papers for two of them; I was going to do this one on the late Roman army, but...computer...so I'll do the next one on Justinian instead), and also
aella_irene came back from Egypt! So there went the rest of my free time. Although, in the process of doing research for the paper I didn't write, I figured out that hey, one learns a whole lot more if they do extra reading! So I expect that to be how I spend the rest of my semester.
This week was also Medieval and Early Modern Studies major week, in the sense that we only had two events (larger departments like the English departments usually have one or more events a day), so there was that -- we saw Becket last night, which, oh my god, why do they not make movies like that anymore? (Um, except for the small problem that Richard Burton's Thomas a Becket for some reason strongly reminded me of, uh, Zachary Quinto's Spock throughout most of the movie. In my defense, they look similar, and he was wearing blue? So that was disconcerting.) MEMS chose just about the worst week possible -- Monday was the brunch, which, uh, I missed most of, but it was also the morning after the Super Bowl which translates to...if you were awake, and sober, you were probably better off than most of the city. And Thursday was supposed to be the Krewe of Muses, but Muses cancelled because of the weather; they are supposed to be rolling tonight, but man, the weather is not much better today than it was yesterday. At least it's not snowing.
Upon choosing my paper topic for Medieval England, my professor said to me, "Oh, you want the one about warfare? I put that one on there for the boys." (My professor is adorable, I love her, and finally, someone whose spelling makes sense! As she is Scottish, but has been living in the U.S. for a while, and thus has that terrible amalgamation of English and American spelling. Which is what my spelling is turning into.)
In other news, it does not feel like Carnival season; it is too damn cold and I haven't been to any parades yet. (We didn't go to the Saints parade; it was also too damn cold.)
According to my Byzantine Civ professor, Louisiana is basically the same as a late Roman province.
