lassiterfics gave me: "Victorian bounty hunters!" although unfortunately I know just enough about the Victorian period to know that I know nothing about the Victorian period despite last year taking a class called Victorianism about the Victorian mindset. We shall see what this gets us.
London, 1870
Dinah Rondeaux is an American expatriate living in London after the brutal disillusionment of the American Civil War. Along with a mismatched group of comrades, she serves as a bounty hunter, often traveling to the farthest stretches of the British Empire in order to fulfill her clients' wishes.
Characters: The Regulars

Dinah Rondeaux (played by Gina Torres)
Half-white and half-black, Dinah Rondeaux grew up free in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1861, after Louisiana seceded from the Union and joined the Confederacy, the Rondeaux family moved north and attempted to make a new start in Boston, Massachusetts. As hostilities between the Union and the Confederacy grew to a fever-pitch, Dinah disguised herself as a man and enlisted in the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, and served in a number of engagements throughout the remainder of the Civil War. After the end of the war, her family returned to New Orleans, but Dinah spent several years wandering around the continental United States before finally emigrating to Britain.

Jacobina Sirrill-Brightmore (played by Anna Torv)
A diplomat's daugher, Jacobina Sirrill-Brightmore spent most of her life in constant motion, growing up in India, Egypt, and Australia. At age seventeen, she married a young soldier against her parents' wishes and was promptly disowned; her husband died less than a year afterwards, leaving Jacobina pregnant and alone in India. After giving birth to a stillborn son, Jacobina returned to England -- if "returned" can be the right word for a country she barely knew. She spent several years making a living by writing for numerous periodicals under a pseudonym. A talented linguist and chameleon, she's one of Dinah's closest friends. She and Olivia Chambers are involved in a relationship

Farid Shahi (played by Naveen Andrews)
Little is known about Farid Shahi's past before he came to London with his son Numair. He and Jacobina Sirrill-Brightmore met in India and later reunited in London. Although he and Dinah were tense upon first meeting, they later became close friends, and she has before defended his custody of his son Numair. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, he fought on the side of the British, and disappeared soon afterwards before reappearing in London.

Numair Shahi (played by William Moseley)
Like his father, little is known about Numair Shahi's past before their arrival in London a few years ago. Nothing is known about Numair's mother or if, indeed, Farid Shahi is really his father. Numair is multilingual; his first languages were Hindu and Farsi. He hates England and on numerous occasions has voiced his wish to return to the outreaches of the empire.

Olivia Chambers (played by Rachel McAdams)
A native Londoner, Olivia is a trained doctor, a rare trade for a woman, but made possible by the fact her deceased uncle left her a large fortune, the majority of which she lost gambling. Her father vanished on the Franklin Expedition, leaving Olivia to be raised by her uncle. She and Dinah clash frequently, but she's saved Dinah's life more than once. She and Jacobina Serrill-Brightmore are involved in a relationship.
Characters: Recurring

Captain Dominic Starke (played by Damian Lewis)
An officer of the British army serving in Egypt, Starke is the illegitimate son of a prominent member of Parliament. He and Dinah's team clash during a mission in Cairo, and Starke is intrigued by the presence of Numair Shahi, who is patently not Farid's son. He serves as the primary antagonist throughout the first season of the show; following his dismissal from the army at the beginning of the second season, he takes up with Dinah's team.

James Laurence (played by Ben Browder)
An American ne'er-do-well wandering the Middle East, Jamie Laurence fled the United States after the end of the Civil War. A Confederate officer, he returned home to Georgia to find his family home burned to the ground in the wake of General Sherman's March to the Sea and his family missing. He and Dinah's team seem to meet every time she's in the Middle East.

Noor Jarrah (played by Zoe Saldana)
A sneak thief the team meets in their first episode in Cairo; Farid catches her robbing them and then lets her go, since she has nothing to do with their mission. She appears again later in the first season, when Numair goes missing. Despite the age discrepancy, Numair and Noor have an intense affair.
The Plot
Dinah and her team are a mismatched group of wanderers, most of them with few ties to England or the British Empire. While initially their cases keep them close to home, eventually they start ranging farther and farther afield, allowing them to use their unique viewpoints. One of the primary mysteries is the parentage of Farid Shahi's son Numair, which Numair doesn't know and Farid refuses to reveal. This discrepancy brings them to the attention of Dominic Starke in Cairo, who doubts Farid's motives for remaining in British territory. Also reappearing is Jamie Laurence, whose motives are unknown but who clashes with Dinah every time they meet. The sneak thief Noor Jarrah may be far more than just what she appears to be on the surface.
Miscellanea
Gets cancelled after the first season, is brought back with a heroic fan campaign, only to have a shortened second season ala Jericho. The series ends on a cliffhanger. The loyal fans are horrified.
