bedlamsbard: miscellaneous: read (bookshelf with text "read") (read (girlyb_icons))

*grits teeth* I woke up this morning, went to breakfast, checked my DW network, and found someone harshing on one of my favorite books ever, and by extension one of my favorite authors ever, which makes two authors in two days from two separate people. (Uh, this is none of y'all on my rlist, this was through [community profile] metaquotes, just so you don't get defensive.) Which is just -- I know the book has issues, I know the author has some really weird issues, but you know what? I love those books. A lot. And they are not popular amongst fandom, and I don't understand why, because they include the following things: strong female characters who pass the Bechdel test, post-apocalyptic scenarios, non-Christian characters, fight scenes, non-heterosexual characters and couples, characters of color, cool worldbuilding, different cultural norms, various militaries, smart women, women in power, people fighting with swords, and a heavy dose of reality.

On the flip side, they also have, which apparently outweighs all the former: imperialism (to differing extents based on books), a weird emphasis on race (but hey, you know what? Not in a bad, skeevy sort of way, but in a, "Uh, that's kind of interesting you would do that, and also unnecessary," sort of way), the military in a prominent position, and, in the later books, religion. Also, apparently the heavy dose of reality isn't heavy enough for some people.

I have been meaning to do a rec post for these books for well over a year now; I should do so, probably when I get home and have all the books with me.
