Other fannish moment of the day: While looking at nineteenth century Orientalist paintings in my Fairy Tales class (you know, as one does), we looked at this one ("Bonaparte Visiting the Pesthouse in Jaffa"; extremely large image), which led to my professor asking what we think of when we hear "Jaffa" now.

Which led to me saying, "Stargate!"

The class stared at me blankly. I tried to explain. "Movie!" I said. "TV series!" I said. "SG-1 and Atlantis and -- that other one!" said I.

I think one person in the class knew what I was talking about.

"Says the girl who watches the S-Y-F-Y channel," said my professor. (Yes, he said it like that. S-Y-F-Y.)

(BTW, [personal profile] aella_irene, we were looking at a bunch of Orientalist paintings, and the general portrayal of them is the objectified women as Caucasian, and now I am thinking of Ingvar-verse and the Khanlaris.)

What did your professor *expect* you to think when you heard "Jaffa", then? Oranges? Orange flavoured confectionery?

Ooh? I think-- there are three layers of women in the harem, and, at least socially, their importance goes : Chief wife, Lesser Wives, Concubines. And the concubines are all non-Khanlari (specifically non-Beyazid), and all slaves.
