*quirks head* I feel like I am the only person on the internet who has not read any of the Brontes or Jane Austen. Also, why the fuck isn't The Odyssey on here? *sniffs* I know I read a lot of these books in the children's classics editions, which I didn't count because...well, that clearly doesn't count.

ETA: Aaaaaand I just realized Wuthering Heights was written by a Bronte; I could have sworn it was written by someone not a Bronte, but, uh...how come none of y'all called me on that?

I have no idea how people can have read fewer than 7 of these. How is that even possible? They forced us to read most of the ones I've read for English class.

Same here. *sighs* Although to be fair, I took advanced English classes all through high school, so I'm not sure what the regular English classes took at my (small rural American public) high school.

...huh, there's no Mark Twain on here, either. Weird.

I took advanced English classes too, and I know that a couple of the ones I partially read were read for Academic Decathlon, but still.

Maybe there's no Mark Twain because the list is from the BBC?

Hmm, maybe. But there are a bunch of other American books on here -- well, not a bunch, but a fair handful.

But Mark Twain strikes me as an author who seems to be read for his Americanness, kind of. I mean, it's just my uninformed impression, but his books don't seem to be ones that would end up on a BBC book, since they're so American that they probably aren't books British kids are forced to read in school.

Jane Austen I absolutely adore (ANNE <333) but the Brontes not so much. I have read only bits and pieces of their books because I can't stomach them. At all.

Every so often I feel like I am that weird person who loves the classics everyone else hates and dislikes the classics people profess to love. *sigh*

I must read Jane Austen and the Brontes. I think I fail at being an English lit major if I don't. *facepalm* I do tend to lump them in with Wuthering Heights, though; I'm not sure why --

First off, I am highly amused by something random we have in common. You see, in seventh and eighth grade we had an 'Accelerated Reader' program, and I always scored "off the chart" on the reading tests. My eighth grade English teacher didn't like me because of some reason, so I decided to read the book worth the most "AR Points" for the fun of it. What book was that? War and Peace. I managed it in four days and never remembered a word of it.
