Guys, I am so over Western European medieval history. Bring on the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe! Probably easier to find teaching jobs in those fields anyway.

Of course, this completely coincides with me reorganizing my proposed schedule for next semester, and there's not much reorganizing I can do, since my one goal is to take fewer classes than this semester. (Goddamn Latin, messing up my schedule; I wish Latin counted for MEMS as well as Classics. And yes, Latin will still be a problem even if I take 101 -- well, 151 -- at Central this summer.)

...okay, let's see:

CLAS3190: Pompeii: Life in a Roman Town (plus: the professor is adorable, she subbed for my Art and Myth in Ancient Greece prof today. minus: some of the same people in my Art & Myth class will be in that class. not terrible people, but...I do not approve)

CLAS4060: The Classical Epic (must take class, love the professor, love the subject matter)

ENLS4460: Shakespeare I (love the professor, will count for English and MEMS, am kind of feeling Shakespeare-y, but see above mentioned so over Western Europe. Shakespeare I in this case is Elizabethan Shakespeare; Shakespeare II, offered in the spring, will be Jacobean Shakespeare

ENLS3010: Children's Literature (have never had the professor, but have heard she's very good, it is children's lit, y'all, we might read Narnia! but then I would have to talk about it coherently in a non-fannish context, which I suck at; we would definitely read The Golden Compass and Ruined; I would finish up my English minor for sure)

HISA3150: The Age of the Vikings (must take, love the professor, counts for MEMS, y'all, Vikings)

LATN1010: Elementary Latin (*dramatic sigh*)

Now, that would be fine. That would be one class more than I wanted to take (19 credits), but fine. Except then there are the seminars, and guys, I want them. ALL OF THEM.

HISA6050: The Italian Renaissance
CLAS6010: The Peloponnessian and Punic Wars (same prof as HISA3150 and my Byzantine Civ class)
HISM 6970: The Ottoman Empire, 1300-1600 (although I kind of feel like I should take History of Islam either first or concurrently, and that's being offered too, and guys, I want to take them all)

Also I kind of feel like I should take a seminar, but if I take a seminar, I definitely only want five classes, which means I need to drop something from the above list, and you know what's really sad? ONLY TWO CLASSES OVERLAP. I can't even make my decisions that way! It's terrible. *weeps* (The two classes in question are the Peloponnessian and Punic Wars and Children's Lit, by the way. And I kind of want to take Children's Lit, if only to finish up the English minor for sure; Shakespeare I won't count for that because I'm also taking it for MEMS, it's very complicated.)

...or I could look at my major requirements for MEMS, which mostly tells me I should take the Italian Renaissance, Shakespeare I, and Age of the Vikings to fill the Early Modern requirement for the major (three classes each on Medieval, Crossover, and Early Modern; crossover's filled by Intro Brit Lit I, Fairy Tales, and Spenser; Medieval I covered or am covering in Medieval England and Byzantine Civ (Age of the Vikings will count towards that); but I don't currently have anything for Early Modern, and Shakespeare I and Italian Renaissance will both count for that). Of course, I have another two years to fill that -- oh, wait, I only need to take three classes each in two of those, which means I just definitely have to take Age of the Vikings and then four other classes at some point in time. I do need to take at least one more 400 or above, but Shakespeare or one of the seminars will count towards that. And again, I have a couple more years to worry about this -- huh, I could probably even finish the MEMS major in the next year, depending which classes I take, which could help if I decide to do 4+1 or definitely decide to go for a third major.

As I'm thinking about it, I'm less and less thrilled about Children's Lit, but the thing is that if I don't take it now and Victorian Lit doesn't come up again, it's increasingly unlikely I'll take an English class that won't count towards MEMS as well as English, and I can only count two classes (or maybe even one, but I can drop one of the MEMS classes if I must since I think I'm going to fill the MEMS requirement easily). And I do want to go for the English minor at the very least, because I only need one more class and I suffered through Literary Investigations, I have to get something out of it. (Right now, the English website is saying that Children's Lit will include fairy tales and folk tales (god, not more fairy tales, Alice in Wonderland, Little Women, Treasure Island, James and the Giant Peach, The Jungle Book, The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963 (I haven't read this one in so long, omg), The Golden Compass, and Ruined. All good books (Ruined isn't a classic, but the author is a Tulane English professor and thus available for questioning, I presume) and all books I'd like to reread.) And the professor is supposed to be really fabulous.

I am kind of wary of the fact that right now I'm looking at three reading-intensive classes -- Shakespeare, Children's Lit, and the Classical Epic -- as well as whatever the history classes decide to throw at the crowd, and then language classes usually conspire to make me cry. Pompeii I wasn't going to take, but the professor was very cool, and I really like her, but if I take Pompeii I feel like I should also take The High Roman Empire, but I definitely can't fit that one in, and I am on a strike against Western Europe (except the Vikings!) so I am leaning away from The High Middle Ages (although I do kind of want to take this one if only for the fact the professor is the dean of the honors program and I should get to know him, or something). But The Ottoman Empire! (Guess what we were talking about in Byzantine Civ today? Although I feel like I shouldn't take that without taking History of Islam!)

Um, as a sidenote, the maximum number of credits is, I think, 19, and most classes are 3 credits except for language classes and some seminars, which are 4. (Also science lectures+labs, but I'm going to try and take that over the summer.) Right now I have 18 credits, six classes, and it is not going well.

*wails* I just don't know what to take! It was all perfectly planned out before (a) today's realization that Western Europe is overrated and (b) the adorable Pompeii professor! Advice? Thoughts? Those of you in grad school or in the field want to weigh in on what's advisable to take in preparation?

ETA: It looks like some of these classes might fill up before I register, so that's -- a good thing?

ETA2: Am watching the course listings website and watching classes go out of contention -- Children's Lit is already full, holy shit. Which means I might be able to get into the Peloponnesian and Punic Wars, which only has four slots left...

Things that amuse me: one of my friends, who's an English lit and Gender and Sexuality Studies major, is having the hardest time filling her second requirement for pre-18th century literature, because she hates it a lot. They have since changed the major requirements, but she declared before then. She hates pre-18th century; that is about all I read. *highly amused*

take the vikings class. vikings are amazing. also they have this incredible amount of crossover with the various celtic peoples. i may have a thing about the cultural contamination they give each other. also vikings give you an excuse to look at alexander skarsgaurd which is always nice.
