The saddest story I have heard this finals season: the girl who didn't know her professor's name and was found sitting on the floor of the English office, crying, because she didn't know what box to put her paper in.

(Now, the English office panics me because there are actually two offices, and you have to know whether your professor's box is in 121 or 122, but I always know my professors' names. I may not know the name of anyone else in the class, but I always know the names of my professors!)

I do not even know. Like, I could -- just barely -- get not being able to spell your professor's name, but even then you should probably be able to identify their box just by the way it sounds. Gah, some people. (I will make allowances for finals stress, but it is the end of the semester. You should know your professors' names!)

When I used do the evals at the end of each semester (students doing evals of the course and the faculty), I would put on the board all the pertinent information, because if I didn't, someone would be guaranteed to ask, "What's the professor's name? What's the name of this course?"

AND I WOULD WANT TO WEEP.

Like, I can get not knowing the exact name of the course, but gods know that some course titles are long and annoying (see: "Grimm Reckonings: The Development of the German Fairy Tale" and "Early Medieval and Byzantine Civilization from Constantine to the Crusades"), but seriously, the professor's name?

And I at least always hope I know the short version of the course name (um, I'm sure this has an actual name), because I write it on all my assignments -- GERM 3670-01 or EBIO 2600-01 or whatever.

I couldn't spell my Byzantium and It's Neighbours' lecturer's name. So she read our evaluations to check them...

I am apparently in the minority of SHAME. Out of my six classes I know the names of four of my profs (and none of the course numbers). Couldn't tell you the name of my Ling prof to save my life. Just learned my Classical Myth prof's name today because it was on the course evaluation scantron.

I talk to them. I recognize them on campus and stuff. I just...don't know their names.

Not knowing just never came up as an issue?
