The reason I study ancient and medieval history is so I don't have to hear about modern politics, as it agitates me. This is why I keep busting out historical trivia at the dinner table. *twitches* No, really, I don't want to hear about how Obama is ruining the country; let me talk about how the Robin Hood myth was only perpetuated in Henry III's time, and his taxes were much worse than his father's! (I do not want to hear about politics, period. Liberal or conservative. My father is strongly conservative; I lean liberal on some things and conservative on others and I seriously never, ever, ever want to hear about politics.)

Also, seriously? Do not try and tell me, the one member of this family who is actually living in Louisiana, that the oil spill in the Gulf is not that bad, and it's not really harming anything or anyone, and it's been blown out of proportion by the media, and hey, lots of natural oil spills have happened before and the world didn't end! I. Live. In. Louisiana. Do not fucking talk to me about the oil spill. Do not try and tell me it is a natural event. It is not the same thing as the volcano in Iceland.

*headdesk* I am seriously pissed about the last one, because that one is close to home. The first one is sadly true.

Allow me to demonstrate my reaction to a casual dismissal of the oil spill in animated form:

SERIOUSLY. I've been raised my whole fucking life being taught how important Mississippian wetlands are. >:[

Some days I can handle politics and others I just end up yelling incoherently at the radio whilst driving, which rather distresses my Boy (we carpool). So there are days the radio stays off, or tuned resolutely to the classical station.

...I cannot even BEGIN to express my displeasure at the casual dismissal of the oil spill. The only comparison I can think of is perhaps the reaction of the US at the bombing at Pearl Harbor. Or, even more accurately, the reaction of the Romans at the end of the last war with Carthage. Salt them fields, yo.

It's an AMAZING icon, really. It's sad how much use it gets, though.

I hear you on the politics, my friend. My job consists of listening to everyone on the subject so I get quite the earful. But the oil spill? WTF. I would continue with my reaction, but it's a little bit...offensive and I'm trying not to offend people.

It's actually boring for the most part. It's when you get the crazies that things get interesting. I've had everything from conspiracy theories to a guy who claimed he was going to become a terrorist.

Interesting fact, if you want a survey company to never call you again, ask (polietly) to go on their do not call list. Hanging up means they will call you back.

Most of my kin live in four states (generational above me, not my children, thank mercies): MS, AL, FL, and LA.

Damn straight I care about what's going on down there, and if anyone feeds me any more BS over it, I may cram something in their snoot, forcefully.
