whoo, gemstones!
Jun. 6th, 2010 12:09 pmAll right! Jewelry-making supplies have arrived. Note to self: keep a measuring tape on you at all times the next time you order beads. *sigh* A few millimeters makes quite a big difference.
5mm split rings, nickel-plated: just a little too small for stitch markers, but they'll still work for pendants, if I ever pick up that habit again.
12 mm split rings, nickel-plated: should work nicely for larger stitch markers. The largest needle I have is a 10 1/2, and that fits without a problem.
7mm open round drop, silver-plated: looks perfect for what I had in mind, fits up to an 8 easily, and while I don't have a 9, I think it would also fit a 9, but definitely not a 10.
3mm copper rounds: brighter than I expected, will match with turquoise.
6mm green adventurine rounds: looks good, haven't decided what I'll match them with yet. Probably only about half of them have drill holes large enough for my headpins. *rolls eyes*
4mm cultured white pearl potatoes: look good; on a thread, so I don't know how many will have drill holes that fit my headpins. (Argh, most frustrating thing about making jewelry.)
medium green adventurine chips: no idea for matching, quality's a little darker and more opaque than the rounds.
8-15mm amethyst chips: size is good, majority are a darker purple than most of the amethyst I have already, but that works.
small garnet chips: size is good, a decently dark read, looks good. Maybe try matching with jasper Zuni bears?
large blue/green turquoise chips: larger than I expected, won't match turquoise already in possession because of color (pretty dark green).
medium multi-stone chips: size is a little large, website says collection of golden quartz, red hair quartz, green hair quartz, and red adventurine. Might go with mother-of-pearl flowers.
3mm orange/red imitation coral rounds: smaller than expected, slightly more orange. Might go with brecciated jasper Zuni bears, though it's a bit pale for those.
7mm tourmalinated quartz rounds: bought to replace 5mm quartz rounds that I'm running out of, a couple millimeters larger, mostly opaque white.
13mmx10mm brecciated jasper Zuni bears: nice dark red with flecks of gray and tan; I do love me my Zuni bears. Should work well with garnet and white quartz.
13mmx10mm rose quartz Zuni bears: bought to replace other rose quartz Zuni bears, nice rose pink; should be able to work up a couple of sets with rose quartz chips topping the bears.
15mmx15mm mauve mother-of-pearl flowers: flat, look good, should be able to match with various quartzes or even solo.
small-scale see-through ruler with magnifying lens: aww, free gifts are so nice!
I'm pretty sure the dark gray-brown-black Zuni bears I already have are another jasper (mustang, maybe?), though I'm not positive. If anyone knows gemstones better than I do, I can post pictures.
*cracks knuckles* Today I'll put the sets that are already made on the drop rings and take pictures if the sun ever comes out (spring MY ASS if I wanted it to rain all the time I'd have spent the summer in New Orleans, this is supposed to be dry arid semi-desert, wtf), and at some point figure out how to set up to sell on Etsy. I already have a buyer's account, but I want a different one for selling, since I don't like the idea of people googling "bedlamsbard" for stitch markers and ending up over here. Also because one of those people is likely to be my American grandmother, the one who taught me how to make jewelry in the first place.
